Hey, I have an 89 Dakota Sport 4x4. It has acouple oil leaks: the front diff. and the transfer case. I was wondering where can I add some oil to get me by, and what kind of oil do I use?

hey I bought 80w90 gl5 gear oil and put it in the transfer case, it was a yellow color which is different to the brown that was in there, is that just a color difference or did I make a mistake?

thanks for putting up with someone that knows nothing about trucks :)

hey, make sure that the fluid that you put in the t case is dexron 3. also, i would suggest that you take the cover off the diff case and replace the oil in there, but more importantly, scrape off any RTV (sealer) and then clean both sufraces(on the cover and case itself) with some rubbing alcohol and steel woll. when put a new bead of axle RTV on there. i just replaced mine a few days ago and sound that there was no RTV in the front, so it has been leaking for a while

Your OK

The 4X4 transfer cases use trans fluid

Yes the color was because it is dirty and breaking
down.

If you want to drain and change it all you do need
to remove the cover on the rears no drain plug

I always use the Black RTV sealer and it don't
stick out as much as the blue stuff.

The front cover has no gasket just silicon sealer
