I have a '98 Dakota and was wanting to put dual exhaust onto it. Does anyone recommend any particular brand over another, and where can I find/buy them at. How does is sound? Another question, do you know what the base horsepower would be for this engine?

I am also looking for duel exhaust for my truck, but I am looking at Flowmaster 40 series Delta Flow, but I don't have them yet. Just a thought. I do know that the stock horsepower for the 3.9 engines is around 175 horses and 230 ft.lbs. torque.

I have a Flowmaster dual outlet muffler on my 97 3.9.
It's a 2 1/2 inlet 2 2 1/4 outlets. I have 18 inch long 3 inch Dia. tips coming out under my roll pan. I personally think that it's a little too loud but I've been dealing with it for 2 years. It sounds good, nice deep sound till about 3000 rpms then it kinda sounds like a riceburner. I had all the work done at a local exhaust shop total cost was 230.

I think that's just personal opinion... a lot of people with flowmasters love them unless they get one that's too loud for their liking.
Dynomax is what most of the people here LOVE though. With dual exhaust, don't go true dual or you'll lose a lot of your low-end torque. Go with a single in, dual out muffler if you get duals. Also don't go any larger than 2.5" tubing.

I think Borla exhaust sounds pretty damn good too, but I haven't heard it on a V6, just V8s.

That 40 delta flow is gonna be loud on your V-6 and you will hear it in the cab very well.

It is all opionion an what exhaust you use. I have the 50 series delta and a hi flow cat. Great improvment but I have no numbers to suport increases.

Never late for a Tee time or wheelin with my buddies! Always ready for both!!!

if you go with 1 3/4" or 1 5/8" pipes all the way back from the manifold/header you won't lose low end torque. If you size the pipes to the engine properly you can even slightly increase the low end! The myth that duals wipe out low end on a 6 is just that, a myth, the only ones that have that problem are the guys that use a 5.9 system on a 3.9, it is wa y too big and will causee a low end loss, but if the pipes are downsized enough you will retain the low end back pressure you need to retain a good bottom end.

I have a 98 DAKOTA HAD THE FACTORY dual exaust installed within the first year. There are 3" pipes exiting the rear of the truck, slash cut chrome tips. The good news is my MPG went up to around 17, an increase of 1. the bad news, the pipes are not compatible with trailer hitches, especially the one you get from u-haul. They mad it work though, it forces the pipes down about 3 inches. Looks crappy but still works. If you are hauling a heavy load the rig tends to bottom out and scrape the pipes. They are loud and tough sounding, BUT, you need to crank up the radio to compensate. If I could do over, would not waste the money since I need a truck that can haul stuff. my 2 cents.

Yeah. I don't have to haul anything big so that won't effect me. I do agree that if you use too big of a system that you will loose the low end because you can engine breaths too much. If you maintain backpressure you can increase MPG and power. I really want to increase my low end. I think that that slacks the most in a V-6. And we all know that torque gets you off the line the fastest.

Hi everybody. I have a '94 3.9 V6 and I've been thinking about dual exhaust. First off, I'd have both pipes exit out the right side, I don't want any exhaust stains on my boat.

I've been planing on dropping in a 318. If I go true duals now I guess I'd lose torque with the 6. Would I lose any with the 8 once I put it in? Would it even be better with the 8 to have true duals instead of a single pipe?

Thanks,
capone

it all depends on the size of the pipe, with my 6, i put a cam in it, race headers and true dual 2" pipes and gained a hell of a lot of low end and top end

I just put a 40 series Flowmaster single in single out on my 3.9 with a 18"x3" Stainless tip, always use stainless! It sounds great, not to loud inside either. I think it is all opinion, to bad you can't test them before you buy them!

My 91 dakota i Ran straightpipes with no cats, and I used cheap Cherry Bomb Turbo 2's because I didn't really want to put much money into this right now with the V6 because I'm swapping it out soon for a V8 anyway, so I did a cheap setup, it sounds awesome at idle, but almost has a hint of honda 4-banger sound when it is up in RPM'S can be embarrassing I must admit, lol, but I guess it's just more inspiration to swap... heh.

I would like to put dual exhausts on my Dakota since I need an entire exhaust system. However, I want a muffler that is as quiet as the original. Does anyone know a manufacturer that makes a 2.5 in and out, single in, two out? I would be most appreciative for any information you could provide.

I had dual flowmaster delta 50s put on my 99 dakota 3.9L, and it sounded like a bunch of angry bees. i hated it was embarasing so I took a sawzall, and cut them off 10 min. later. then i went and got 2 flow master hush powers and 2" flowtech hedders with turbo chambers put it on with all new 2 1/2" stainless pipe. I ran them out the sides in front of the back tires, and loved it. its almost as quiet as stock but has a nice low pur! it was a little pricey (around a $1,000) but i put it on my self and saved a few bucks that way.
by the way i put them delta 50s on my 2.3L 4 banger where they belonged.
