Thanks guys, I appreciate the positive thoughts for me. As far as my truck... I think I'm just gonna drop it off and say figure it out... probably in a couple of weeks though. Don't worry, I'll give you all the reports and info... and hopefully an answer ;). I may be sparse but I'll be in touch.

Thanks again for all your help, all of you, and also for the happy thoughts.

Eva

Hi Eva,
How are you? Well I hope.

Yes, thanks, At least I believe so. Put a new dist. re timed it and put in the new O2.
Seems to be running really good, idles and doesn't stall slowing or stopping anymore. I haven't drove it to much since I finished the above. Maybe only 30 miles or so.
It's been in the teens and barely hitting 6 to 10 deg in the last few days. My heater blower doesn't work, so no defrosting it. Poor things sitting with a 1/4 inch of ice covering it for the last 6 days. Starts right up in this cold tho. Heater is my next project which was put on hold when it started running bad.
I also found some bad wiring under the dash, so have got several other little bugs fixed to boot. All that is left(knock on wood), is to fix the heater then I can start modding my engine up a bit.

I hope things have been going well for you. Have you got to do anymore on yours?

Keep us posted and good hearing from you.
Diane

Hi Eva, Yes, Truck is running great! The distrib and 02 seemed to have taken care of my original problems. Put a new h blower motor in, so I have heat now too! Modded my engine with a MSD ignition setup last weekend and it's running really good now. Thanks!

So, you have got them scratching there heads still? Damn, sure hope somebody can figure it out for you soon. It's a shame you don't live close to one of the guys here on the forum, they could figure it out I bet, if they could see your truck. I wonder if maybe you should start a new post. I know it's a pain, but maybe 2nd time thru something more will come up. It's worth a shot if you have the time.

I just read through this forum string and I have a 92 3.9L Dakota with the exact symptoms and have run through the same pains and replacements as Eva and Diane. I however did get an answer to my trucks problem. The distributor drive bushing and the gear in the block that drives the distributor and the oil pump? (not sure if that is accurate or not) was worn to the point where the rotor was barely turning. My troubles started with intermittant stalling at hi speeds when letting off the accelerator, then hard starting, then rough idle and eventually the starter noise problem already described earlier in the string. I replaced everything just like Eva. Finally I got to a point where it would not start at all. I did not have spark, the rotor turned when I turned the motor over but I learned that it was just barely making contact with the gear. Any way to wrap up, the drive gear and bushing was mentioned early on in the forum. If any one has any of the symptoms described in this forum on a 92, replace the bushing and gear or at least checked first. I spent $350 to have my local repair shop replace the parts, but I spent well over $1500 troubleshooting (shotgunning) this problem myself over the past two years.

Ok, figured this one out 2 months ago... the gear in the block was bad (for ditributer) and this guy was so proud when he fixed that! and then it started acting up agian!!! Lol, timing chain and grears. That's what it finally was! Can you believe no one could diagnose that! There was so much wrong all at the same time! But like you chip, the gear for the distributer was soooo bad, that the dist. was jumping all over the place... Sometimes starting on 1 sometimes starting on 6, omg what a mess, I'm into this truck for about $2,500 total on top of what I paid for it, what a mess! Now I'm selling it. I couldn't get it to pass smog last Oct, finally bought a toyota 4-runner '98. I love my dakota, but she needs a new home. I just think of frustration when I look at her, but I still take her for a joy ride here and there.

Does anyone know what the bed measures on a dakota?

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions and support through this whole mess, this was really a costly fix!!

Eva

Well, thank you #1 to the person who created this website. It saved me a bundle trying to figure out this problem.

I have a '92 4x4 extended cab 3.9 with 196,xxxmiles that was doing everything listed above and it all started with a loud metal shriek from under the hood sitting in drive through window about a month ago. The guy that works on this heap for me could not figure out what it was for over 6 weeks. It would accelerate fine, but when your speed leveled out it would hesitate, miss on any random cylinder, sputter and backfire when you took your foot off the gas.

Well after he and I looked over this thread one day at work , he got a few ideas. It turned out to be something simple. There is a metal plate with a half moon shaped lip that spins on the distributor. It sets the circuit relay to the Hall's Effect switch that in turn tells the computer when to fire the #1 cylinder. Well, this metal plate sheared its screws and was freely spinning at random, telling the computer whatever it felt like.

$96 dollars later and a reman. distributor and its on the road.

92 V6 stall and loud when running
IP: Logged

Message:
Ditto to Jack's last posting. I have had some of the problems mentioned. We did have the intake gasket replaced at manifold due to the oil consumption, it was indeed an issue. We took the cat of some time ago due to the oil going thru and clogging. Just had the muffler replaced, just in case. Intended on cking the EGR valve next. Truck seems to sound great if you just listen at the motor, but from side and near back - would swear there to be a huge exhaust leak somewhere though the exhaust people say no. Truck runs really loud and rough, especially at take off up to about 30 to 40 mph. Are any of y'all in the South btw? Any comments or other suggestions desparatly seeked. Like the truck, but don't want to put more than worth in it. Hats off to Eva and her Toyota. Hard to beat a Toyota. BTW, truck does run and doesn't stall once out of reverse or past initial take off. Also, don't know if helps but turning the A/C off seems to help with it not acting like is going to die at stops and start ups. Have also done the neutral thing too to keep from dying when stopped. Thanks again for any helping hints.
