Since there seems to be quite a bit of misguided info out there regarding the 3.9, I have taken time to respond to some of the topics on this forum. As far as the stock 3.9 goes, it offers little performance in stock form. It has a lot of bottom end torque for its size but is otherwise an unimpressive motor in stock form. The good news is that these motors, when modified properly, do offer much to be contended with in the performance realm. The key is: Get an education!
It's hilarious to read some of the crap that some of you guys waste your time writing. A "4.3" Chevy Extreme being rivaled by a stock or near stock 3.9 is not likely. On a by-note isn't the Extreme powered by a 4.1 anyhow? In any case, the Extreme is rated @275 h.p. compared to @ 175 h.p. on a stock 3.9. It's not requiring a 3-digit I.Q. to see where the advantage lies. Now I am no Chevy guy, nor will I ever be. I hate GM products and have owned them in the past as well as a Ford. I am overall not really impressed with GM for many reasons that I won't bother to go into at this time.
I you are going to talk trash, get a clue. Then get an education. My little Dakota has had a dyno-proven 200 rwhp w/@218 ft/lb. torque without the blower that I put on it. This was done with good planning and modest modifications. It has a bit of cam, but it's not radical. Without a blower, it would keep up with a 4.1L Vortec powered truck. At the top end, it would even start to pull ahead a little, but I was hitting triple digits at that time (100 mph +). Not bad for a few bolt on performance goodies, and a few clues. With the blower on it (a modest 6 lbs. of boost), it's even that much more fun. Do your homework, talk to your mentors, and follow sound advice. Don't be an ignorant Dodge owner.
Clues found here: Marty @ KRC Performance, Dave @ Hughes Engines ( a very sharp Chrysler guy with lots of Magnum engine knowledge, NO Fords or "Chivys" found here). There is a large amount of other performance goodies available by mail order, etc. If you're gonna talk trash, first get the punch to back it up.

I believe you mean 4.3 Vortec. However, I do agree with you to some extent, people say they are beating sports cars with nearly stock 3.9's.

The only six cyl enjine that GM has that makes 275 hp is the I6 they are putting in the Trailblazer and the Envoy. It is a 4.2L not a 4.1L. As far as I was able to find this enjine is NOT an option in the s10.

yeah, i think your the one who needs to do his homework. the 4300 vortec in the extremes only puts out 190 hp, not 275. stock 3.9s can hang with them, but probably not beat them.

A mild cam and bolt on's will not get you 200 hp
at the rears unless you add them up as the manufacture claims but they are not even close
to what you really gain

cold air 20 hp
exhaust 20 hp
headers 20 hp

That would be 60 hp but in the world I live in
that might be 10 to 20 hp

267/305 no jive over $6000 invested in the motor
RWHP real RWHP

stroked ported and matched a very radical cam
mod intake, 10 to 1 mopar pcm and more.

The local racing team is running 90% nitro methain
and the V6 is pulling over 400 ponies baby. over
$12,000 in this motor

Its there if you want to spend the money.

you people are also forgetting the rear end gears. when they are claiming they beat s-10's
with a stock motor they may have 3.92 and the
s-10 could have 3.55's or higher.

I know i can take them as well as ford rangers.
I also have a rc with just a couple mods, nothing
major.
