I just picked up all the parts today from mopar.
For the new chain and tensioner install

I am going to hook my webcam to my laptop to take
the pics if it works or I have to go to my bros
house and get his digi cam.

I will put it up here and Mark is going to also
put it in the how to section located on the home
page http://www.dodgedakota.net

I can show you how to time the cam with a degree
wheel but you would also need a dial indicator
and a magnetic base but I will show how to do it
so those of you who want to tweak the cam will
see how its done.

You can get offset keys upto 5 degrees if its not
right and get the center line right on.

Will be doing it on Sat and should have it up here
next week some time

Great! Thanks again Larry.

I'll be doing mine a week from Saturday so your instructions will be most valuable. I have the timing chaing and the offset keys already. I also have the degree wheel and the dial indicator with a magnetic base.

Just wondering if you have done any of the updated timing chain guides on any of the newer Dakotas?

If you are talking about the tensioner to solve
the noise prob yes many

92 to 03 all use the same tensioner and I will be
taking pics and explaining how to install it a
new chain & sprockets, I will list all the part
#'s for the mag and pre mag chain and tensioner
are the same but different gaskets for the premag

You can use the tensioner with the mopar chain or
a double roller, I am using the mopar chain on
this job a 94 3.9 with 90,000 miles on it

I also have found a degree wheel that everyone
can print out put it on a piece of stiff cardboard
and slip over the crank and key and set the cam
for best performance.

You may need some offset keys 1 to 5 degrees
I will be advancing this cam 2 or 3 degrees to
bring in more low end torque

I have also come up with a way everyone can take
an old spark plug and make a piston stop to find
true TDC

The dial indicator you are on your own can prob
rent 1 from a parts store like autozone or
carquest.

I will be showing you how to dial in the cam 2
ways with the centerline, and how to find the
centerline not so accurate and using
your cam card or stock #'s at .050 lift more
accurate using duration

I will also explain the effects of advancing the
cam for more low end or retarding for top end
you can go + or - 6 degrees on most cams and still
maintain your valve to piston clearance.

.080 on intake .100 on exh and with an alm rod
you also need to add .030 for stretch

After I get it all put together anyone here should
be able to understand how and why you would
want to degree your cam for Max performance
and do it themselves.

I have been building hi perf motors for over 30
years and once you see how easy it is you will
wonder why you never did it before, to me its
childs play but if you don't understand it, it can
be very dificult to figure it out.

I like this, J and J School of Automotive Technology. Larry, Will all the instructions you present here work on the 5.2 also. I have a 92 4x4 with 97,000 miles and it' ready for a new chain. I also considered having a 3 point valve job done, considering 1.7 roller rockers.

Hey Larry, How many miles are 4.7 timing chains good for before I have to be worried about failure? I never had a TC break, but have heard the horror stories. I have 111K on my 00 Dak. Guess I am from the old school of replacing parts before they fail.

Larry,
thanks so much for doing this, it's gonna be a real big help to me.

My chain is clanking SO BAD right now. It's gotten a lot worse in the last few weeks. Probably cause I drive 120 miles round trip to work everyday, and I've got 141,000 miles with stock chain set. I've never done a t-chain, so the pics will be a BIG HELP!!

Thanks again for ALL you do!!!

Its done,

I will try to get it up on the board tomorrow
sunday Dec 14

Took 4 1/2 hours that included degreeing the cam.

Have not test driven yet will do that in the morn
but no more rattle tat tat, It really smothed out
the idle and sounds great.

Just for the hell of it we checked where it was
with the old chain it was 6 degrees retarded no
wonder the low end was gone. This thing was ready
to jump a tooth.

We also degreed the cam with the printed degree
wheel and a home made piston stop from a hollowed
out spark plug against my regular degreeing equip
and it was within a half degree so it will work
and save you the cost of buying the tools to do
it.

I will have pics and instructions on exactly what
is involved.

with a little emagination I guess anything is posible
