94 king cab Dakota V6...
How difficult is it to remove the fuel pump from the gas tank??? I'd like to try cleaning the filter, etc...
How do you get to it??? From the top or under the truck??? Behind the seat??? What tools are needed???
TIA
Cheers,
Ray

The fuel pump for my '89 Dakota is in the gas tank. Have to drain it, remove it, replace pump, and then reinstall the tank. Fun!

Call a few buddies over, take out the 8 bolts that hold the bed to the frame, they are bolted from underneath. Unplug the tail lights and the filler neck and just lift the bed off and sit aside. You can now sit on the rear tire and work on the fuel pump. Much easier than having to drop the tank.

Thats what I would recommend. When I replaced my fuel pump I was able to use an over head hoist. So all I had to do was undo the filler neck, wiring harness and spin the two bolts off the straps.

careful, before ya just throw off the 8 bed bolts, first you have to disconnect battery cables, tail lamp wires, the exaust support hangar, fuel vent hoses, spare tire winch, then the hold down bolts. thats what my dodge factory service manual says for my 96. Steve

fuel vent hoses, spare tire support and exhaust support are all attached to the frame, not the bed. You do not need to remove any of these to remove the bed. It is a good idea to dissconect the negative battery cable before working on anything...but not really needed just to remove the bed, make sure you dissconect it though before working on the pump itself

I do admit that the tank internals are very easy to work on with the bed off and I do prefer that method but, if that is a little intimidating to ya the under Dak method isnt to bad IF you can get the Dak up on all 4 corners. If you can get ramp or jackstand height on all 4 and have a floor jack its not to bad. just hope your a patient methodical type beacuse it can tax you pretty good.
3 suggestions...............1: make sure you run as much fuel out as possible, 2: spray penetrating oil on the strap studs at least 4 times over the week prior to this job and 3: you will need an extreamly deep socket (forget the size, think 9/16) and a preety long extension to do it comfotably.

Good luck to ya!

Yeah do a bed tilt. That is where you lift up just the front of the bed. It works great and a whole lot faster the taking the bed off. Just take a 5 gallon bucket and put under the middle of the bed. It takes 2 people to lift the bed and one to put the bucket in.

Good luck.

only thing you would avoid doing by tilting the bed is just unclipping your tail light harness.

its easy to take off with just two people. I have removed mine by myself.

Ok, doing the math I have concluded that it would cost more for me to do this myself than if i took it to a mechanic. Hell guys, having to have my nails redone will cost me $50 alone!!!
ok ok ok.... I will stop with the joking around. But I could not resist the temptation to play the Silly, ignorant, ditzy female here. LOL Now all joking aside....I am going to remove the bed now. I will post when I am done, so that any other 5' 3", 115 lbs females out there who might read this will have a good idea of what THEY will need to do in this situation. LOL. Thanks Guys, Your advice has been extremely valuable to me. *blows Kisses*

I did the bed tilt. It's a piece of cake. The part was $90 including new screen. The tire lowering tube has to come off. The filler neck can be unscrewed inside the fuel door. The tank was 3/4 full.

The connections to the pump were soldered, I assume to prevent sparking inside the tank.

I did this repair for the neighborhood hay farmer. We propped the bed with some boards and put a safety chain to the rafters. No smoking!!!

Thanks to this forum, saved big bucks. Started at 9 am, finished the truck in time to have lunch with the farmer.

I believe you have to mostly empty the gas tank, and drop it!
