I've looked through some of the previous posts but can't find what I need. I'm getting ready to head to the parts store before they close, getting a flowmaster I guess. I live in a non-emissions testing(hick town) area and we were thinking about eliminating the cat. What do I need to do for this to work correctly? Please Help! Diane

I really don't want to run illegal, where-as if I'd get pulled over away from my area, I'd get ticketed(don't need that)LOL. If its not to bad maybe we'll try to clean it out. My main concern was the o2 sensor, if the cat is shot. Then replace it at a later time. Any sugestion on what I should purchase, leaving in about 20 mins. Thanks, Diane

Once you get the cat either removed or gutted
see how it runs and how your gas mileage is.

The O2 is recomended to be replaced every 60 to
80,000 miles.

On your 88 removing the cat will not give you and
trouble lights its throttle body injection and
a whole differant ball game than multiport.

If you have any probs just come back to the board
if not me someone will help

I live in the St. Louis area here in Missouri, where emission testing is required, however, the cops don't check to see if you have a catalytic converter or not, its not a ticket issue. The state ran emission inspection folks in this area will make you to put one back on if it came with one during inspection time. The catalytic converter was removed from my '78 F-100 long ago. After moving here, I had to put one back on it, no fines, you just can't pass the visual inspection portion and get the vehicle licensed w/o it.

Hi Guys, I'm baaaack. Got the muffler. Only Flowmaster I could get tonight was a 40 series, so I got it, hopefully get it on tomorrow. Should of went to the big city of St. Louis for a bigger selection.

Hey mhall02, I'm originally from St. Louis CO, grew up there. Where you at and where'd you move from? I now live in the big town of Hermann(wine country, tourist trap, hicksville)LOL. Love it tho, ever been here?

Anyway, they don't test for emmission in the sticks, but I'm glad to know the cops don't check for cats up your way. We'll leave it on if it's ok, if not we're going to gut it or remove.

Larry,
Thanks once again, your great! I don't know about the o2, since I just got the truck and got it in Ohio, so I can't talk to the people very easily to find anymore out about it or what all they had done to it. Not much I don't think. They only had it a little over a year. The guy bought it for his daughter, but she had 2 other really nice cars and didn't ever drive it. I'm sure I'll be doing a lot of things to it over the next several months. Hopefully my manual gets here early next week, so I can cram, haha!
I don't remember if I posted that just putting a new air cleaner filter on it made a world of differance. Poor truck was choking to death with that old one. Also added some fuel injector cleaner. It still doesn't have much power on take off, but it accelerates good and drops gears well and most importantly, it's not stalling anymore. It seems to run a bit better every time I get in it.
Sorry to ramble on. All for now. Diane

One of my friends put a high flow cat on his 92 GMC Z71. You could look right through the thing like a glass pack. It passed local emision testing in Massachusettes. You might want to look that way if legallity is a concern. I think he said he only paid about $80 for it from Summit.

Summit sells the Catco brand and they give you a
bad rotton egg smell.

The carsound highflow made by magnaflow you can
see right through and doed not give you the egg
smell, $96 with shipping from truckperformance.com

If you have a tax # you can also get a discount on
that price.

Your 88 Dak 4X4 if running good should get around

I cut my cat out because it pissed me off rattling around like they do, but I was broke at the time, so I spent 3 bucks on a piece of pipe instead of 100 for a new cat. Anyway, later my rear 02 started acting up, so I bought an 02 sim from here. http://www.thefastman.com/02Simms.asp hope it helps. Aaron

My wife and I live in St. Charles, she is originally from Arnold and I am originally from way down in the sticks in SW MO, Monett area. Bought my '91 Dakota down in Imperial MO and have used this board to help me fix a few of the little odd and end problems it came with. My muffler sprung a hole a month or two ago, but safety inspection isn't till 2005, so I'll hold off on replacing it for a while. I'll probabally get whatever is cheapest, I don't care how it sounds or performs as long as there is no leak. Good luck with your truck.

Larry, I want u!!! LOL
Glad to know about the catco. I hate that smell!!!
We have a dump trucking bus, but don't have a tax ID, just work off our SS#. I can get a Mopar discount at dealer's tho, I used to work & my ex still works at the Fenton/St. Louis plant, altho won't be using it for a (factory) cat. I use it mainly when I need brakes, rotors, etc. Hate AutoZone crap. Used their brakes and rotors on my 97 Caravan Sport. Had to replace in 6 mos. then again in 6 mos. Took everything back, told them it was Sh** and to give me my money back. They did, with no hassel which was surprising. I'm rambling again, sorry. I'll follow your advice if I end up buying one, thanks!

Also, Thanks for the O2 and mpg info. I hope thats what I end up with after we get everything done. Coming home from OH got just under 18. I did hit passing gear quite abit, so probably would of got a bit better. Last tank, mixed driving - got 16.5. I'll be happy if I get close to 20. I drive these country roads fast, so anything close to 20 will be great!

Thanks, mhall02. I might need a lot of luck for awhile, till we get all the bugs worked out. I love the truck already tho, but, it's a Dodge, so what can I say. Have had Mopar since I was 19. That was quite a while ago and I'm a died hard!
It's cool to find other's from your area on here tho. :) I'm so happy I found this forum!

Two of my sons (have 3) and I used to come up to St. Charles almost everyday, up untill about 3 years ago. We All played in-line Hockey in St. Charles and sometime in St. Louis for tournaments. Also, lived in St. Pete till 82'. Arnold is a nice area, really grown over the last 20 yrs. Don't know Monett area.
All for now, take care, YOU TOO LARRY!!

going to remove the cat, huh? You probably wouldn't do that if you knew better. Perhaps you oughta read this, and then be sure to get a really good gas-mask if you still wanna lose the cat? http://www.nexusmagazine.com/ulp1.html

I had my local custom mufller shop gut my cat and they said it was illegal but the would do it for 45$ and they did they just said keep it on the dl and i noticed an improvement on low-end torque(really wierd considering alot of people on this board said it would mess the low end torque)and it really kicks azz but i do smell more exaust than normal....its understandable since what ive done. The truck sounds like it has a bad ass cam in it on a cold start and its definitely louder now. I love it and i thought it was worth it.

Thanks for all the info you guys, I read that article, very interesting. Reminds me of the tobacco company/Gov. scams. Good article!
Anyway, I have already purchase another Cat. Decided, to when we took the old one off and it was so clogged, ran and got one yesterday, just a stock one, after all. Old one had holes in it and was really clogged. When I ran the truck down the road with open exhaust didn't seem to have any more power, just sounded good, I decided just to put another cat on it.
All you guys are great, thanks for so much input!!!
Hopefully will get it all on tonight. Need my 4x4 tomorrow, were getting snow here in MO. LOL
