I am not sure if its welded in on the 87 but what
you need to do is either replace it or gut it.

Once off just use a pipe and knock the insides
out and just put it back on.

Be sure you get all the pieces out or they may
blow down and plug the muff. That sounds like fun
Plug The Muff

You can cut it out and put a piece of pipe in
place of the converter and just replace it later
at least you will be able to run your truck.

On the 87 it will not effect the running hardly
at all and may even run better.

Ken, Could you decribe the problem and what makes you think it's the cat. converter? We think this may be one of the problems we're having with our 87 Power Ram 50. Also, I just got a 88 Dakota 4x4, off road type with v6. Where can I get help on the gen1's?
Thanks, Diane

Hello Diane you can tell if your cat. converter is clogged if you press the accelerator and it acts like something is stopping it up. Its doing that because of back pressure!

P.s. if you need more info let me know

Thanks Ken, thats kinda what I thought. Plus it has a putting sound coming from the muff sometimes, kind of depends on the weather, how it sounds tho.

Damn thing is welded on and gonna be a pain.

Also, is there anyplace or anybody here that knows where to get parts for this little truck (87 Power Ram 50 4x4)that don't cost an arm & leg. Needs some carb work. Other than that, still runs good with 235k on it.
