Hello everyone I was going thru some old issues of Mopar Muscle mag,and came across a article called Magnum head games.

This article is talking about how good the Mopar magnum heads are and how you could order a Mopar Performance porting templates that will show you how to clean up the bowls and intake and exhaust runners to their specs.

They say the airflow gain would be as high as 15 percent over stock and all this would work with our stock 5/16 inch valve stems and valves. They said this is for the beginner on a budget could do this with the right tools.

So I figure more air more power so I thought I would ask the rest of you have you seen this before or did this and how did you like it and how was the performance..

I figure if they dont make it for the 3.9 why not get the 318 templates and work from them, since our 3.9 are just like the 318 without two cylinders..
I look forward to hearing from you all. quick 6

I was just wondering are you haveing the heads done to the die cast templates specs that Mopar performane sells or you just having them done by a machinest?

I dont know if it is any diffrent then what you are doing but I though I would throw it out there and see if any one new about these die cast templates or not.

well good luck with your heads and I hope it brings you lots of power. Quick 6

I was just going to have them bowl cut and then blend the bowls by hand. After that do port matching on intake and exhaust.

At the same time I'll be doing the intake manifold.

Any help or hits would be appreciated.

Well sorry I cant be much help in this department for ya but I am sure they guy you have doing it knows what he is doing..

Are you going to get the 1.7 roller rocker arms while you have the heads off??

They dont show any measurments in the story just a gauge that comes with the templates..

I am just wondering what year Dakota you have and how many miles on it?

Already have the 1.7 roller rocker arms.

I have a 96 with 56K on it.

I'll also be adding a Cloyes timing chain that I'll degree in exactly to specs. Also new 19lb design III injectors from fiveomotorsport.com.

Hey I was just thinking while you got the heads off you might want to look into geting those coopper head gaskets for the use with nos.

Here is the web site
www.milodon.net

I just though I would pass that along, because if your like me you never know what you might add next.

I dont know a lot about those head gaskets but do some research on it, I just happen to see it in Hot rod magazine.

Porting your heads are easy if you have access to a Die Grinder. They have the bits @ most Lowe's and Home Depot's. Long cone shaped Burr bit and some sanding barrels. It's a slow & tedious P.I.A but it builds gratification in doing it yourself. When I had the heads off there were marks on the intakes left from the gaskets, I shaved it all the way back to the old gasket markings on the intakes and when I finished I was so beat that I just polished the exhaust ports.

As far as the "Bowl Cut" are you referring to the valves? Take the heads to any decent machine shop and they can "Vortec" cut the valves. It's tried, true & proven in race engine over & over. It's a 2 step cut on the valves and matched seats to create 2 sealing surfaces. Once complete they can flux check for cracks. I did the port & polish, Shop did all other work for $125/Set.

Good Luck,
Shank

a better thing is to get a 3 angle or even 5 angle valve job. They cut three precise angles on the valve and valve seats to allow perfect flow in air. I believe the cuts are 45 degree 90 degree and 135 degree. Also have the valve under cut right above the seat.

as far as porting and stuff...

just get a manifold gasket and mark out any area that is inside the gasket. Cut that down slowly with the die grinder and then use a stone to blend it in no more than 1" into the port. After working the bowl and stuff... polish up the exhaust port with round paper and polish up the combustion chamber. This will help carbon from sticking to em and help prevent detonation. Dont do it to the intake port... leave it a little rough and this will help with fuel/air mixture.

Hey there Intense has anyone came up with a good solid turbo charger system for our 3.9 yet?

You mentioned that a supercharger was not worth the money and the more I checked into it the more I think I like the turbo instead..

One other option I can do is my buddy just offered me a 350 four bolt main for my truck. I have been wanting to get a engine stand and put it in the garage and work on it as I feel like it..

I just got done reading a article where a guy took a 350 and stroked it out to a 383ci and dropped it into a Dakota, or is that to much like cheating LOL.

I would rather stroke out a 3.9 if I could get the parts but I think larry said the parts are hard to come by, then I could take my time and build it when I have time and the money to do so. What is your opion on this.. Thanks quick 6

no turbo yet... i was gonna help someone with one but he sold his truck.

a 383 is a pretty common motor... probably buy one a lot cheaper than just the stroker crank for a the 3.9.

if you go that route... just look at a lot of custom work.

As intence said don't go over board on the porting
You can increase the flow but 1 thing you need to
remember incresing the flow will also raise the
rpm where your peak HP and Torque are and the low
end will be effected.

Unless you plan on reving high, use nitrious a
blower or turbo than you would want all the flow
you can get to breath free at high rpm's

I have found that a good 3 angle valve job modded
intake, cleaning up the ports and matching them
will give you better perf than full porting on
the V6's and is very noticeable over 2500 rpm
it will give you a longer power band and peak
about 25 more ponies if you have the right cam
to go with it.

porting will help on a high reving motor if you
want to keep your power in the 2000 to 4500 range
don't go over board you will regret it unless you
plan on other things and a higher reving motor to
get to your power band
