Hey Larry sometimes when I start my truck and press the gas it acts like it has something clogged in the exhaust or something but after a minute of holding gas pedal down it finally blow it out and run like an angel. I have removed my E.G.R. pump and when I first removed it the truck sounded a whole lot better! And it ran great! And another thing is when I rev the engine and let the pedal go I hear a rattling sound. I look under the hood one day and I rev the engine and I saw the thing under the hood that is attached to the exhaust that turns when you rev the engine and it was what was rattling. What can I do about this without having to buy any new parts. I have 240,154K

your cat.converter may be plugged, depending on what the year it is, could have three.

i,m not sure of this thing on the exhaust, but i think your talking about the flapper in the exhaust manifold on the driver side.this helps in the engine warming up,if its rattling then its working

You need to tie it open its a heat riser used
when engine is cold if its floping around it
can close your exh off.

Tie it open, you can get a new themol spring for
it so it works right.

Is this 'themo spring' a dealer item? My '91 makes the rattling sound on the exhaust manifold as well when I push the clutch in and up-shift or rev the engine as Jim2 said. It has been doing it since I bought the truck in March. How hard is it to replace and it can close you exhaust off? What happens if this happens? How critical is it to replace this 'themo spring'? Thanks for any input.

I had one on a '86 Dodge D50 4x4 w/Mitsubishi engine. It's an early attempt at an EGR. I ended up snapping off 2 bolts opening the cover, The guts were clogged with carbon and the spring had rusted into obliteration. Spring was $8 but I ended up replacing the whole piece ($220) after I broke off the bolts, It never would seal.

Good Luck,
Shank

My 89dak 3.9L 231,000 mi. does the same thing, debating on just welding it open, rather than buying a new one.
