I have a 95 dakota 3.9. At 160k the eng blow # conting rod to pistion righ in half well there went the block and oil pan that had some nice new holes in it. Well got a rebilt 3.9 put the new one in and new cps and plugs wires and cap. here the problem it turns over. But no fire to the plugs. I checked the volts to the coil and it 2.5 to 2.7v on start and then to 1.9v if u just leave the key one. Checked the coil and it oms out and it get fuel just no fire. any Ideas on what could keep it form firing? Thanks u for the help and sorry about this being so long.

Thanks For Your help

first if you took the coil wires off, check that
there not back-wards

second pull the coil wire from dist cap and hold it about a 1in from ground, have some one crank the motor over and watch for fire,if you have good fire check rotor button/cap,if no fire coil
or dist pick-up in dist, crank sensor pass side back of head

third did you index the dist? looking at the motor from the front

turn the harmonic balancer clock wise to TDC
[making sure not to turn counter clock wise if you do start over] with #1 piston on compression stroke

when you have this ,remove dist cap and adjust dist so the rotor button is pointed at the line on the plastic plate in the dist

now your base timing is set for the injecters and dist firing

tighten dist down

good luck

Also check your crank sensor. I pinched the wires before during an engine install & was grounding out against the block. Whe you index the distributor you only have a 5 degree window of oppurtunity. Good luck,
Shank

I had a similar engine problem. Lower half of the engine exploded. #2,3 &5 rods went out the Oil Pan in different directions. What more could you expect from a heavily abused 3.9 w/203k on it :) Got a stock from a wrecked back on the road for now, Performance V6 in the build~!

Next time a Honduh wants to race
Ask him how many sheets of plywood he can haul?

I replaced the crank shaft sensonr when I put the eng in I knew that it is a pain to get to. The wires are fine for what I can see being that its hard to see the end by the bellhousing. The V i was talking about was to the coil plug. Its on right as far as I can tell. But thinking about it the wires form the dist got pulled when we were taking it out. Did not know they were there :( I did insp the plastic plate didn't see any damage to them. Can u buy just that part and could this stop it from geting 12v to the coil? outherwise the eng in base timed I believe seeing that I have yet to start it. I just find it odd that the batt at 12v but all I get at the coil wire is 2.5v I would think this has to be 12v or dose this coil run on 2.5v? I do know that its geting power just no fire off the post. My dad says get faint. More like u can hear the crack but don't see it at all he says. THe coil worked just fine 4mos ago then the truck sat with out the hood for 4mos.

Thanks for the help.
