Subject: Question for Larry & fastdak & intense
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello guys well I have been reading past posts and thinking of what I want to do.. I have a 2003 3.9 Dakota with 5600 miles on her and these are the mods I have done at this time..

(1) home brewed cold air intake
(2) Dynomax muffler
(3) remote start
(4) Hard tonneau cover
(5) Amsoil 0w-30 since 1000 miles
(6) Kleen wheels brake dust deflectors and other things that dont pertain to the question.

I am going to go to the junk yard and find a pair of 3.9 heads and a intake, and I want to know exactly what I should have done to the intake and heads to get the most power out of my 3.9..
I also have a brand new v-8tb, this is my train of thought I have.. I want to get the heads and intake (port matched) done (to your guys instructions) and add the tb on that then in the spring (or sooner) put it all on at one time..

By the time I am ready to put this on my truck I will have put the new wires & plugs, cap, and rotor & relocate the IAT sensor and 180 stat..

Will relocating IAT sensor be enough (gas wise) to accomidate all this new air flow??

I have read in past post about getting the intake gasket done right after altering the intake any suggestions on this..

This is to intense if I cant find an one to do the intake do you want to do it?

I want to remind you this has to be a daily driver, I drive it 100 miles to work everyday..

Future modifications after intake and heads..

(1) Cam
(2) This one is dependent on price Power dine Super Charger like the one they did to the s-10
in the 30th anniversary issue of Truckin

Well I hope I covered most everything in this big post.. I also want to tell everyone to have a happy thank giving.. Cya

i,m not any of the guys your looking for.but port matching won,t do much unless you are going to turn it hard[rpm]

go with porting the heads, cam and roller rockers
[and if you use 1.7 ratio rockers or a cam with over .500 lift, better valve springs]

hughes engines.com have a beer barrel intake thats been worked, just tell them your add ons and spec.[and future add ons]they also have cams.

i am gonna go with a lot of what vern said.

The main thing on the 3.9 heads is that they just need to be cleaned up. on the number 2 and 5 exhaust ports, there is a really nasty casting that needs to be ground down. If you wanna try to get the most power out of it, run a little higher than the stock 9:1 compression, select the perfect cam, undercut the valves, three angle valve job and so on. There's a lot that can be done with a intake manifold and i have some pix somewhere that i'll show you later (too busy now). I have not experienced with port matching the heads to the manifold, but with any engine it could only help and not hurt.

now if you are looking for 3.9 heads, i have two complete heads off of a 98 3.9 with only 62K miles on them. If you want them, let me know

I think Im one of those guyz. :-D>

Anyway....those guys have most of all the good mods, the only thing I would caution is to make your head purchase contingent upon no cracks. 3.9 heads have a bad tendency to crack.

Unlike most I will reccomend better valve springs as soon as you change the rev limit. I have seen a pretty dramatic difference a couple of times even with stock cams. Better seat pressure is better seat pressure no matter how you look at it and if compression at any RPM can benefit I say go for it as it is a cheap mod.

I will also differ a bit and tell you that every engine I have ever built has benefited from bowl porting. Valves are usually shrouded quite heavily and this will free up substantial flow in all rpm's.

IAT relocate will bump your timing up a few degrees dependent on where you put it and how cold it stays relative to the engines actual IAT. I think Intense had the wildest mount that I can recall to date. lol
As close to the air cleaner (in a CAI setup) is usually sufficient.

I would go ahead and do the TB mod, that will give your Dak quite a boost and will keep your pumped up about the rest of it.

Good luck to ya and happy Tgivin to you!

Well guys you gave me a lot of suggestions on what to do with the heads and now I would like to hear what you think I should do to the intake?

I did print off some of the other post you had done in the past but I just want to confirm the mods to the intake before I get started..

I am going to go to the junk yard tommorow and look around and see whats out there.. I have not done this in a longtime it should be fun.. We have one junk yard out here that deals strickley in Mopar products..

Intense what did you want for the heads? I know shipping will be a arm and a leg tho..

Guys I had a problem with hughesengines.com website, does any of you know what they are charging for that intake they have.. I will have to call them when the holiday is over with..

I have been away from working on engines for a long time and things have changed..I guess I used to do it the lazy way and buy the kit and just build the motor..

What about shave the heads a little or wont that work because of higher compresion ratio's, and still running stock pistons..

I dont want to go any farther down into the motor than the heads for now other than a cam.. I guess if you do the cam you might as well buy a double roller timeing chain and gears while I there, or what ever is the good stuff now and days..

The truck is still very new, I figure it is the best time because it is at its strongest it will ever be..

I just want to take my time this winter and buy all the best stuff and have the proper work done on the intake and heads with out it being to much for the lower end of the motor..

Money is not a big issue other than a $4.000 super charger that I would like to have and the new hood and new rims and tires..

I have the truck for only 3 months and I want all this stuff for it and the wife might kick my butt.. In fact I know she would, that is why I will look for a deal on the super charger when I am ready and the time is right..

Some wifes just cant understand LOL :-)

I dont like to spend money foolishly but we got to have our toys right.. Well thanks for all your help guys.. CYA

Well Fazdak and vern intense this was a most productive day.. I went to a couple of junk yards just looking around and asking questions and I happen to go by this speed shop that I never new was there and I got to talk to the owner for about a hour...

We talked about the old days of racing and how it has changed to today, He got me convinced the best bang for the buck would be a new computer and a super charger and the throttle body..

There are other Questions I will be talking to him about later, but know all I have to do is do some looing into what computer and super charger will be the best for my applcation..

He said he does not do to many Dodges but he kept talking about Paxton S/C, He did not say that is what I should get but I will have to do some looking and see what is best for my 3.9..

I told him I have been away from this for about 15 years now so bear with me and my questions.. Well I am feeling a whole lot better now that I got to talk to him..

I value your imput as well guys so if you would like to give me your two cents I would gladley like to hear it.. You can e-mail me at BCSDutcher@webtv.net or we can do it on this forum it dont matter to me, I just get tired of hearing the flamers talk.. Thaks as always guys.. Cya
