Subject: heat doesn't work

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Went out tonight and when I was coming back home, the e-brake light on the dash was on. I don't use the e-brake for anything really so I just thought a fuse or something blew. Well I went to turn up the heat and realised nothing was coming out. I also found out, that when I switch the heater to the off position, the e-brake light turns off with it! Hopefully someone can help me out here because I can't figure out for the life of me whats going on: checked all the fuses and stuff and now i'm wondering if the resistor i've read about may have something to do with it?? Any help is appreciated, thanks alot. (sorry for the long post too)
James

Depending on how it fails the blower motor resistor can cause your blower to not work, or only work on certain speeds.

The brake light will come on when your ebrake is on or when your brake fluid level is low (depending on the year of your truck).

If the brake light is going on and off when you turn the heat on and off you have a broken wire or someother problem behind the dash.

This happened to me on my '93 Dakota Ext. Cab. The blower motor resistor under the hood on the passenger side fire wall attracts moisture over time from heating and cooling. In doing so, the metal stud that the actual coil attaches to rusts and burns into. 1987-1996 Dakotas all used the same resistor that is rectangular shaped and mounts to firewall with I believe 8mm screws. Just remove connector first, then two screws and pop in a new or used resistor.

Mine went out in sub zero temperatures...frosty seeing breath in cab! Anyway, I have learned to keep a spare in my glove compartment for future failures in the winter.(P.S. The ones from Chrysler mini-vans are different and have to come from a Dakota...tried that alternative and connector pins were different.)

Hopefully, you solved your problem before now, but thought I would reply just the same.

yup i fixed it, and the resistor wasn't the problem (i was hoping it was but i've learned over the years my luck isn't that great)it was the blower motor itself, and it wasn't that bad tearing the dash out actually, the only problem was trying to remove the blower itself...and also the dodge dealer in my town wanted to sell me one for 110 bucks! luckily i got the last one from pep boys for 50 lol, but thanks for the reply anyways, hope ya had a good holiday
