On my 92 w/140k miles I think it to be the AC compressor whining this morning. It has done it one other time a while back, but lately has been fine til today, it just got into the 30 degree range and its whining.

It changes frequency as I drive (changes w/rpm). What can I do to stop it. The ac works fine and the whining sound is the same whetehr or not the ac is on. Im thinkin of spraying some WD40 to lube. Or is it possible that it is the timing chain?

I am going nuts trying to figure out the same noise on 2001 Quad Cab. The noise only happens when its very cold out and also varies with speed.
I mostly get it when I am at 60 at 1600 RPM...if you accelerate or decelerate when the noise is happenning it goes away. Did you fix the problem?

I havent done anything. The noise hasnt appeared in a few weeks til today, but today it wasnt bad and didnt last long. My dakota drives like crap when cold outside, when warming up. On long drives, when cold(like 30-40F), it drives great. The tranny shifts so smooth, engine has more power and is smooth, and the ride seems better. Maybe its me, but when cold and dry, aftetr warmup the dakota is awesome
