Subject: Removing Console/Middle "Seat"
IP: Logged

Message:
I want to remove the middle console/seat thing...
So, I'll ask for two specific answers:

1.) How do I do it? Does it just unbolt or will I have to cut stuff. If cutting/drilling/yada-yada is required, I'm not gonna do it. Dad would freak if I couldn't put it back in if he didn't like it out. Where are the bolts and how many are there? Do they use a special socket/tool or just ordinary tools? I think that's all...

2.) Or would it happen to describe this in a Hayne's manual which I will be purchasing shortly?

On another note: I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30 yesterday. I also removed my stock airbox (since I have an Edelbrock air filter) and the rubber flap behind my grill. Just wondering...with the Mobil 1 should I still change my oil every 3000 miles or should I let it go longer?

I removed mine and I had to cut. I did mine a while ago so I don't really remeber the way it was put together. However, I do remember seeing rivets. Anyway, I took a plasma cutter to mine so it isn't going back together.

Thanks John...looks like I'm not gonna do it. My dad would have a cow. Unless somebody knows a way to do it without cutting, I guess no more replies are really necessary, unless someone wants to answer my question about the Mobil 1.

Nah, don't cut it man... easy as said. there are 4 bolts under the center console. i forgot what size they are but you if you feel it under the 4 strips you can kinda know what size to use. its either that or unscrew both seats and pull it off from there. takes about 2 people to take each seat out. i can show you some pix. i took mines out last month and its still out. i bit more roomier in my truck now!!

mahalo,
Scotty just my 2 cents!

Hey GB2000, I use mobil 1 and change mine every 3,000. You could go longer, like 4,000 to 5,000, but I would not do it on my truck. Changing the oil is the best thing that you can do to give longevity to your motor. If you would like to go longer between your oil changes use Amsoil, the stuff really works, you just change the filter every 3,000 or as needed. Most of my friends swear by it, and I am getting a catalog pretty soon.

Hey Scotty, I'd really appreciate it if you could send me some pics. GB2000@woh.rr.com

Ed,
Thanks for the info...I'll go ahead and change every 3000 then. Even though it costs almost double what it used to, I'm sure I can afford it.
I'll prolly be switching to Amsoil sometime in the near future. So far I've yet to hear any bad things about it, but I have heard many many good things.

Thanks again to everyone who responded,
Josh

gb2000,

i just removed my center console today. Just take the whole bench out by removing 2 bolts behind each seat. Then remove the 2 bolts in front of each seat. I think the bolts behind the seats are 18mm but i dont know what the bolts in front of the seat are. Once you get the bolts out, take out your whole bench, and flip it upside down. There will be 4 bolts underneath the seat that connects it to the other 2 seats. Remove those bolts, and then just put the 2 seats back in the car.

Sounds pretty easy, can anyone tell me if you could then install a non-factory console, or a factory console meant for the two bucket configuration? I am looking into upgrading my seating to leather, so a nice console instead of a gaudy one would come in handy. An does anyone know were I can find replacement leather without having to replace the hole seat? Thanks...

Ed,
I'm sure with a few modifications you could install a non-factory console in place of your current one. Don't quote me on that, but I'd think since you'll have that open space, you could modify anything that's not too large to fit in it. As for the leather part...ask around and find someone who reconditions it. They may be able to help you out in that dept.
