Subject: 3.9L Cat-Back...which one?!?

Message:
Woohoo! Cat-Back exhaust for xmas!!! Now i just need to pick which one...and hope its not over the limit. I definitely want a dual exit and I really like the Gibson slash, flame exhaust tips. But i want it to be dual exit...i was going to go with the traditional dual out the back style, but i also like them coming out at an angle behind the rear tires, or im open to other suggestions.

What I want out of this Cat-Back: THE BEST rumble i can get out of a V6...i hate rice burners, it needs to emit a deep rubmle (I know its not a V8, but i want to get as close as i can). It does not need to be quiet by any means...as long as it sounds good and its legal in PA. As far as a power increase, I know im not going to see a wopping increase from just a Cat-Back, but it would be nice to have some extra power under my foot. And finally, what can I expect for gas mileage increase?

Thanks a lot guys I appreciate any imput!

Well you can put your eyes back in your head, because the best thing you can do to the v6 is just change the muffler to a Dynomax 17748 about $50 bucks

Do your self a favor and get a superchips controller that will give you more kick in the pants for about $300.

hey quadmxracer, the v6 has a nice rumble in some spots, but if you put on a loud muffler your cab will sound like a ricer most of the time.it's hard for a 6 to sound like an 8,but the magnum comes closest(odd-fire design I guess). My MBRP exhaust system sounds cool off idle to about 2-2200 rpms. After that she'll growl like an accord.Gawdawful sound but after about 3600 she starts to rumble again.Oh,1 more thing to consider is the noise you'll have inside.Just turn up the stereo -that's what I do.
as for milage,i saw about a half a mpg with that mod alone.headers and 1.7 rollerrockers will compliment the hell out of the exhaust too

I have the Gibson exhaust that exits from the rear. If you don't mind the noise inside, it sounds great outside. Gibson doesn'nt make one that exits in front of the rear wheels on each side for the Dakota. I have heard that there is some low end power loss, but I did not notice that. There is some increase at higher RPM's. I don't usually drive hard but the couple of times I have...

Before the install, when I shifted from first to second it would chirp the tires. Since the exhaust work it burns about 15 ft of rubber on the same type of shift.

So you may see some increase you may not, depending on how you drive.

By the way mine is a 2003 SXT club cab. V6 5spd.

Yea...im a teenager...sound doesnt bother me (I may regret it later but oh well). Plus I am beginning to buy my speaker system (I can finish it off when i get my bonus check from my summer job)...so chances are I wont hear the exhaust much because ill be jammin' in the cab to my new 700W system.

I dont know if ill be able to deal with the MBRP exhaust because 2200-3600 is where i drive most, and I cant have any resemblance of a rice burner (I make fun of my friends 4cyl eclipse all the time, I have a weedwacker that sounds meaner!)

I was seriously looking at the split-rear Gibson, and then getting the 3.5" slash flame tips...but I heard somewhere that it really wasnt that loud, and I want it to be noticable. Jared, you have the split-rear design? Is it definitely a noticable loudness, and does it give it a nice rumble?

Any other brands/suggestions?

Thanks Again

Like Sad2Say stated, get a Dynomax or a Flowmaster 40 series muffler for sound and then spend the money you saved for a SuperChips programmer to get that extra HP!

Yea that sounds more practical...but then what should I do with the stock tailpipe? Id still like a nice look coming out the back compared to that wimpy looking little stock one.

When I had my Flowmaster installed, I also had purchased a stainless tip. At the exhaust shop I had them take the bend off, run it straight out the back and put the tip on for only a little extra.

just have them cut it before the tire like you wanted and have them run the pipe out the side with the tip ya want they might have to push the muffler back a little or you might be alright.

save you tons of cash if ya do it that way.

Sorry for the delayed responce.

The noise is definatly noticable with the gibson system. Unfortunately most any loud exhaust on a v6 is going to sound a bit ricey at certain rpm,s. It has a nice rumble at idle and lower rpm's. Seems to resonate the worst at about 2500 rpm. Its kind of hard to tell how it sounds at higher rpms (it screems, I haven't been outside the truck with someone else driving so i can't tell you how it sounds outside at high rpms). For the rpm range your interested in you'll be hitting the range where you'll see the biggest improvement.

It is loud enough so that the wife doesn'nt want to ride in it.

You WON'T get a ricer sound from any exhaust/muffler you choose. Smaller displacement cars (or "ricers" as you all call them) will obviously produce a higher-reving higher-rumble sound close to that of a mower or motorcycle. The V6 isn't a smaller displacement engine and won't sound like a "ricer." BUT, it won't sound like its bigger brothers, i.e, V8s no matter what setup you get. At normal idle, it will sound
pretty decent but once you step on the gas the rumble will start to get higher. Actually, it will sound deeper inside the cab than whats actually outside. That was my experience with the gibson side exit setup. I swapped out that nasty Gibson muffler for a Borla but kept the Gibson tubing and it definitely sounds better. No, not a V8 but also not a "ricer."

I have a magnaflow on mine and I am pretty pleased with it. It is definately louder. It gave noticeable power too, when i first left the shop I took off and it spun tires easier than it use to. It sounds pretty deep most the time, sounds kind of ricey when the truck is cold 4 some reason? Magnaflow is definately well built, lifetime warranty. I dont know how it sounds compared to others but seems pretty good for a v6 to me
