The 3.9L V6 Magnum is by far the best choice over all the other "smaller" trucks. I looked at a 98 ext cab. ford Ranger with the 4.0 the other day and i just did not like the room in the inside and the engine was laggin power. Another thing that got me was its awefull looks. The ext cab. S-10 is decent all tho its got a little more displacement (4.3) then the others but I found it kinda rough and not as confortable to ride in. I would say it moves the truck around pretty good compared to the ford. And then last I tested a 98 ext cab V6 Dakota and loved it!! The looks are by FAR the best outa of all of the other trucks!! The power from the 3.9 was more then sufficient for what im gonna be using if for. To tell you the truth I thought the Dakota was the funest and most confortable truck to drive and felt like the engine was a bit stronger then the other two. I didnt stop in here to bash those chevy/ford trolls that roam this site but I just wanted to let you know wich one I liked the best.

I think the V6 is ok for the CC 4x2, I'm quite satisfied with mine - and I have another Dodge truck with a 360 and a 350ci Firebird, so it's not like I don't know what adequate power feels like (settle down, flameboys, I said adequate).

Yeah I am quite satisfied with my 01 Dakota as well compared to the others i test drove. Just loved the extra cab room as you said it and the power.

I didn't realize the V6 Magnum had power. It takes me like 10 seconds to accelerate to 40 flooring it.

coatesler - unless you have a 4x4 QC then there is DEFINATELY something wrong with your truck (and I don't mean "Yeah, it's a Dodge!).

I like my v6 ok...but it's too underpowered for me. Passing on the highway is a scary thing even without a load.
Oh well, maybe I'll end up modding it or put in a 318 from a wreck...that would be kinda' sweet.

I also looked at the Tacoma. Nissan fontier, Ford Ranger(I don't do GM products)and test drove them all,before deciding on my Dak. I choose the V6,because that is what I wanted and the SXT CC package had everything I needed for less money than the others. So far in 17,000 miles the truck has done everything I wanted to do without problems. I have enough power to pass, tow lite loads ETC. I am extremly happy with my Dak

The only bad thing i dont like about my truck is just that it, as coatesler mentioned, you have to stand on the gas in order for it to get up and move decently. Now whenever im on the highway and want to pass someone theres plenty of power sitting there to be delieved. You can hear by intake a roaring and theres no better feeling passin someone with the K&N just a growling. I think my truck seen alot of top end improvement once i put that K&N Filtercharger on and Dynomax muffler on.
