Subject: Rear Brakes sticking or is it the Tranny
IP: Logged

Message:
I have noticed lately when i stop at stop light or stop sign that it fills like the rear brakes are sitcking then releasing. But on several occasions have noticed the when I go to take of that there feels like the rear wheels are not moving then there is a point at which the rear wheels pop free and start moving and everything is fine again. The brakes squeal every now and then too. I have also noticed a whistling noise going down the highway when i reach about 60mph It does not do it all the time just everyonce in a while. Anyone have any suggestions on what might be wrong?

Thanks
Aaron

Okay... since I'm stumped, I'll ask something and hopefully you'll be able to say, "Duh...well that's a stupid question!"

You DO have the parking brake released right...?

Jack the rear end up and hit the brakes be sure
they release, you may have some broken return
springs

Another thing that happens is the E brake cable
sticks on just force the actuator levr back inside
the brake drum and don't use the E brake untill
you replace the bad cable

A hardware kit with all the springs and clips for
both sides is about $12 at autozone.

Just take your time and replace them making sure
you put the right springs in the right place

Yes the emergency brake is not on. I have never used the E-brake. And everything appears to be in working order. I took the rear drums off and cleaned the brake dust out with air, but the truck is still locking up every now and then and sometimes has a squeal when I apply the brakes. It is weird cause sometimes you have to punch the gas to get the truck to move. By the way my truck is a v6 2002 dakota club cab sport plus 4x4

Thanks
Aaron

I'm gonna have to go with Larry and say you may have some broken return springs... did you check and make sure all the springs were attached and working when you pulled the drums off?

check your axle seals. if they are leaking, the pads will get extremely sticky and cause the brakes to lock up.
