I see cold air intakes on ebay all the time for about 100 bucks...are they worth it?... what are kind of benefits are you getting out of it? I am looking to give my V6 a little added power without spending a whole lot of money. If anyone has got some ideas on some cheap mods, let me know please.

Kyle

Yup! But you can also build your own for about 60-70 dollars. Biggest expense is the K&N filter (about 43 dollars).

Oh, almost forgot...

Go to www.speadtweaks.net and check it out. Bernd is cool, and there are some 'free' mods on the 'Tips and Tricks' section. I _highly_ recommend the TPS Adjustment (better throttle response) and the IAT Relocation (after you get the intake mind you). You can also get some Autolite 3923 plugs there for cheap, and the Borg & Warner Cap and Rotor. I'm assuming you've got no mods yet, so here's what I'd do...

Cold Air Intake (Home made)
TPS Adjustment to .75volts or so (If not already)
IAT Sensor relocation to Homemade Intake (easy)
Autolite 3923 Sparkplugs (Cheap, less detonation)
Borg & Warner Cap and Rotor (Cheap too! Connections)

If you've got a bit of money left, get some 9mm wires and the Accel ignition coil and adapter. Also, keep an eye out on Ebay for stuff. I just ordered a set of brand new Ford Motorsports #19 Fuel injectors (Direct drop-in replacement) for about half retail cost! Do a search for 'fiveomotorsport' (www.fiveomotorsport.com), Bruce (owner) occasionally has them up.

I think Bernd has a listing on his site... I bought myself an Airaid unit. But you'll need two large hose clamps, the K&N filter for sure, and some sort of tubing and a way to secure it... I'm sure you can do a search for 'Home made air intake' on the internet maybe.

Tornado Air deal?

Do you mean a throttle body spacer or the crazy coffee can thingie that 'swirls' air going into the engine?

Either way, loose them. They don't help, and I've heard the air swirly thing can actually hurt performance a bit.

Can someone tell me the exact parts i need to build this Cold air intake? I looked at bernd's website, but its not that specific. If someone could just give me step by step instructions on what to buy and how to install it, i would really appreciate it.

If im not mistaken, i know i need to buy some 3" hard plastic tubing, some rubber coupling, and a K&N Cone filter. is that it? im pretty stupid when it comes to engine mods. but i have every exterior mod done so i need to go in! Thanks.

You want more power. Simple Solution buddy. YOU NEED $$$$$$$$
Dont waist your $ on something that is going to give you a 1kw power change and maybe if lucky a 1.5 km difference in fuel. K&N filters do help a little. If you want more power for a $1 just take the air filter out and put a stocking over the intake pipe to stop the dust. You will sure feel the power difference then. And the colder the day outside the harder your car will go because the engine is getting colder air which = bigger bang!
For those kids who want to do cheap engine mods and get huge power Difference I got just the soloutions for you Holden V6 and V8 Owners. The Standard VN 5.0 has 165Kw at the flywheel. A good and cheap mod for this is to go and see crows cams. The have a Cam and Memcal package for most cars.
I have a VN SS 5.0ltr. When I got it it was 165kw Stock standard with standard exahust system.
First cab off the rank I went out and got myself a set of Pacemaker 4 into 2 into 1 extractors and a 2 & half inch system out with twin cats. Total Cost for exahust system plus fitting $700
This gave me a very nice power gain and gave me 169kw at the flywheel. And sounded much nicer aswell.
Then I seen the guys at crows cams. They had a cam and memcal package. With this you get a Stage 2 cam, new lifters, valve springs and Chip(memcal)
This was advertised for $900. So I went out and got the package but I said that I did not want the memcal with it. So all the gear for the package Minus the Memcal was $500. I did not want there memcal because all there chip does is tell the ECU that the engine has a bigger cam. And thats it. Where if you go to a performace Chip joint, (Chiptorque)they will make you a chip to suit the stage 2 cam and then some. They program the chip to suck every little bit of power out of the engine as possible. Where Crows chip does not do that. As I said crows chip only tells the Ecu that the cam is bigger and it does not suck every resourse that the engine has to offer(Crows Chips have much room for Improvment.)
So I seen Chiptorque and they made me an Aswome chip to suit my new engine Configuration. Total cost of getting the new remapped Chip was $495. Please note that these chips are designed to run the cars on P.U.L.P. Optimax. 98 Octane fuels.
So to add this all up.

165KW Standard VN SS EFI Cost to by Car $11,000
Then added,

Exahust $700
Stage 2 high performance Cam, lifters and valve springs $500
Custom CHIP (memcal) $495
Home made cold air intake $20
K & N Filter $25. (It was of the back of a truck if you know what I mean. (hot)
Total Cost in parts $1740

Before. 165kw
After. 236kw Proven Dyno readout.

If you can do the labour yourself good luck to you but if you cant your looking at about $700 in labour plus gaskets, oil and a few other small things like you may be up for a new set of spark plugs ect.

But this is well worth it. A Crappy old VN SS getting up to the VT VX VY power range. Guys I only paid 11,000 grand for the car standard.
Then I spent $2,500 on the beast and I am only 24Kw off the Gen 3 5.7 ltr 250kw
Now thats pretty good going based on the fact that one of those things cost about $60,000

Guys stop playing with you doodles and stuffing around with cold air intakes. If you want more power you simply have to spend $$$$$$
I went to Holden the other day for a friend because he wanted to Cold air intake for his VS v6. Brand new they want $400 bucks. Now think of it. $400 bucks for a 1kw power gain or $1700 for a 71Kw gain. You do the Figures. Boys stop talking crap, save your money instead of spending it on bongs and cones every night and you too can beast your cars up for a very little cost.

I hope I have givin you guys some idea's. Any Questions just email me at simpleway.2000@optusnet.com.au

"take the air filter out and put a stocking over the intake pipe to stop the dust"

WTF?!

No stocking will stop any dust! It'll stop bugs, leaves, etc. but not dust.

That is why you buy a K&N filter (or one like it) to get the performance of it plus stop the dust.

So people, don't believe this nonsense! Unless you want to ruin your motor and sensors with the dust that will get into them.

Does anyone know if the 97-99 V8 K&N FIPK system will work for the same year V6?

KP97DAK, how do you like the ruger? I have a KP97DC that is one of my favorite, except the ejection toward the head. I still like the feel of the 1911 better, but I don't feel as safe with it.
