Well, I finally got my engine finished and installed in my 92 Dak. After all the problems, delays and mistakes she is finally running. I made a few changes here and there...KB +.030" Pistons, FMS 19# injectors, shaved heads, Crower Roller Rockers, +.050" pushrods, MSD 6A Ignition, MSD Superconductor Plug wires, Dynomax exhaust system etc. NOW she has the kind of Power I would have expected from the factory. A friend of mine talked me into buying some Bosch Platinum +4 spark plugs. He said his engine performance inproved significantly in his 4.3L Blazer. So, I figured what the hell, I've spent over a year and all kinds of money trying to improve on this thing. Why not. I shelled out the $40 for the things and instead of an improvement I noticed that my overall performance went DOWN. I'm not happy with these things at all. Am I hallucinating? Has anyone else had a similar experience?

A mechanic told me a while ago that the bosch platnum +4 wern't designed for our dakotas, they were designed more for the rice burners out there. He didnt go into details about it either...
Stick with the 3923's

DavidM, I think your mechanic is just another drunken redneck who doesn't know shlt from shoe polish.

Yeah, Autolites are sh1t. I guess thats why NASCAR teams use them, who wants to win races anyway? Maybe you were using their lawnmower plugs, or maybe youre an idiot. Maybe youre little truck can take that drunken redneck machanics 600hp mopar in his garage.

Well, all I know is my truck was wheezing on the Bosch's. I'm not sure why. I stuck the generic AC's back in and immediately got my power back. Since more people seem to recommend them than not, I'm going to try the Autolites. I picked up some 3923's at Wally World for a little over $6 this morning. They can't be any worse that the Bosch's.

Where did you get the Autolites? I've looked here in Michigan at Murrays, Pep Boys and Autozone. No one seems to carry the Autolites. Is there an online store that I can order these from?

Thanks!

I noticed that if you starve the them of power you do not burn the fuel as well. do you have a heavy duty coil?

The whole idea is to burn the fuel more efecently (sp)

Yes I have tried to bosch platinum 4's in my dakota and they brought down the performance too. I was told that they are not made for our trucks. The Dodge dealer said that the best spark plugs for our trucks our the champion spark plugs they come from the factory with since the engines were origionally designed and tested with these plugs.

With your MSD 6a if you add a MSD coil get some
AP3923 and gap them at .060 and you will feel the
differance.

Not APP or the regular but the AP platnium tip
only

I tried every plug out there +4's were fine until
you try to rev it up than they are good for $hit

My second choice on plugs was either the champ
truck plug but they do not have it in 11 1 range
cooler or autolight 5224 extended no 5223 either
The halo H9a ran good but was to hot also I am
going to try there H9b 1 range cooler some time
they ran great untill I did mor mods than I needed
a colder plug.

Ask Mark the creator of this board he also went to
the AP3923 at .060, he said he noticed the diff
as soon as he backed out of his garage it had more
power accross the board with this set up

Thanks Larry. I got the 3923's at Wal Mart here in Indianapolis for $1.94/2 pack x 3. I have a "Blaster 2" coil with the 6A. I'll try the .060 gap and see what happens. I never would have thought I could get away with a gap that big. Right now I have to figure out what happened to my wiper transmission. The motor turns but nothing moves.?!?! I won't have time to tear into it until Friday. Any thoughts on that one Jedi Master?

If they are the regular plugs 3923 gap them at
.045 to .050

The only reason you can get away with the bigger
gap on the platnium tip is because it takes less
resistance to fire than the std chrome nickle

the reg plug will be to hot at .060

run them a 100 miles and pull one and they should
have a tan color on the insulator if not you need
to make some adjustments.

This is where a lot of people miss the boat you
need to adjust the MSD system for the correct
heat, the std gap will be to hot just open until
the tan color is obtained. go .050 see what they
look like if white close .002 to .048

These systems need to be ballanced for optimum
performance

That's what I figured. I bought 6 AP3923 plugs tonight. I returned the 3923's (since I hadn't installed them yet) for credit on the Platinum units. They go in at first light.

What about Splitfire spark plugs. I put the Splitfires in my truck and they run great. I had a rough idle when cold but when I put them in, the rough idle went away.

I had the splitfires before I went to +4 platinums in my '97 3.9L 4x4. Don't waste the money on the splitfires. From what I hear the 3923's are the way to go. As soon as I can find them I'm putting the autolites in. One question...the 3923's that are mentioned...are they AP3923 or just 3923?

The AP3923 the lower resistance to fire the plug
from the platnium tip alows you to open the gap
farther .005 .008 on a stock system

Not APP just AP the reg 3923 or 3924 run factory
gap you can open them like .010 more if you have
an aftermarket Ign upto abot .050 if you go over
that they will be to hot, you want a nice tan
color on the insulator.

With the MSD 6a and MSD coil you can go upto .060
create a bigger flame front burn the fuel faster
and get some gains

Maintaining the optimal temp will give you more
perf and gas milage and a smother running motor
its what the factory has already figured out for
you with there ign, if you change ign you need to
adjust the gap for the hotter spark to maintain
that optamal cyl temp and burn

I put splitfires in my 95 when it had like 4000
miles on it and it cured a flat spot and they do
run well in these motors, With the MSD setup
they ran a nice tan at .055 gap

I run splitfires in my mag 3.9 and they run great. I think its a excellant plug for these motors. I have not tried the Bosch platinum plus 4 plugs yet so I can not comment on them but with the way these splitfires run, I really dont have any plans on changing.

Stick with the splitfires the + 4's do not run
well in these motors and if its running good why
would you even want to change the plugs

Unless they have 60,000 miles or more than I
would think about it, recomended change interval

After selling parts for so long, and seeing gimmicks come and go, I can stand firm and say Autolites are crap. Bosch do have problems in some motors such as GM quads and Caddies. Stick with the factory champions in the mopars.

The reason that some of you like the splitfire plugs, is that Autolite makes them. Ever look at the same poor black oxide finish on the Splitfires as the Autolites? Don't waste the $3.99 a plug on SF plugs....buy the regular Autolites (if you prefer), or buy Champion, and put the extra 2 bucks in your toy fund....
