Alright guys, I thought I'd post here and see if I can do something instead of taking it to a mech or stealership. I own a '91 V6 3.9L automatic tranny Dakota. Often times in the colder months, the engine will bog down while idling (idles at 600 normally). I used some fuel injector cleaner in the gas, and it got rid of part of the problem. Now however, when I'm braking to a stop, the engine will bog down (the rpm's drop and the truck "trembles"). It's exactly as if I were driving a manual, and I didn't downshift or pull in the clutch. The engine will bog down, normally to about 100 or 200 rpm, then it will either return to 600 (downshift?) and idle fine, or it will die completley. Recently, it has been just spending alot more time bogging down at a complete stop. ie: I'll come to a stop, the engine rpm's will drop to about 150, but they will stay at 150 for a couple of seconds, instead of going back up to 600 and idling fine. The main reason I think it's downshifting, is because it happens about 2 or 3 times while braking to a complete stop from a decent speed (once for each gear it downshifts), but the worse one is ALWAYS from about 10mph to a complete stop. Recently, the truck died completeley, and I had a bit of trouble starting it again. Before, It would restart just fine, and idle a bit higher (1K-1500) for a second or two when it was restarted. This problem doesn't happen every time I stop, but it does happen most of the time, and it seems to go away when warmer, dryer weather arrives. Lastly, the transmission fluid is at the correct level, the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor are looking good. Guys, I need your help trying to get this fixed, please reply with any suggestions, and ask me if you need any more info. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Your problem doesnt sound like tranny trouble.? I would look closer towards the intake or some part of the engine. I honestly dont know the setup of the 91' dakotas but it sounds like a problem with the AIS motor on the intake side of things. This motor gets sticky over time and has trouble adjusting quickly enough while engine rpm flares up and drops from shifting or even just placing the vehicle in park. AIS stands for Air Idle Speed motor. It should be easy to replace; just two screws on the throttle body. Another idea it might be your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) that regulates position of obviously of the throttle position. Thats all I can think of.
I would seriously look at the AIS motor; if the 91' has it????

Well, not sure if this is the same but on my old car '91 cavalier it was doing this thing where when I would come to a stop it seemed like the automatic trans was not downshifting and would kill the engine... Felt and sounded just like if you came to a stop in a manual trans and left it in 3rd gear... After this happened I would have to put it in park start it up rev the engine and slam it into gear and off we went. After this starting out slowly and not happening too often it got worse so I took it to AAMCO and they did a quick check on it and ended up being this little sensor on the transmission. The part was only $10 but the install required the engine to be unbolted and lean it forward to gain enough access the the spot to change it and that was $400 in labor... Doh... Car ran great after that... Once again not even sure if that would be the case on your truck.

I would have to guess your EGR valve or associated componets related to the EGR are not functioning. Pull tha vacume line from your EGR vave and see if that helps.

sounds to me like the torque converter clutch might be staying engaged. Very common in GM. products. The fix was to replace the tcc. solenoid in the valve body. Does the torque converter disengage when you touch the brake pedal above 55mph? Watch the tach for rpm rise. Not sure if dodge does the tcc the same as GM but I will look into it.
