Subject: STILL PINGING...this sucks!
IP: Logged

Message:
So I took my '00 V6 CC to the shop yesterday...for two things:

1- MIL was on, code was Po138 (downstream O2 sensor voltage too high)
2- BAD pinging almost all the time (when warmed up)

So, they tell me that my downstream 02 sensor is bad.
I take the truck home and replace the 02 sensor with a new Bosch unit ($90 worth). Start up the truck, take it for a ride...MIL is now off (cause I reset the PCM), but IT'S STILL PINGING LIKE CRAZY!

I don't get it...it didn't do this a month ago...what could have changed? Driving on the highway is horrible...overdrive REALLY makes her ping...add a slight incline in the road, and it sounds terrible.

So, what else to check? Everything is stock...no mods. I looked down the TB into the plenum, and there is some oil in there, but it's not a puddle or anything...just looks like scum/residue.

I've had this truck for 4 months...haven't had 1 good day with it.

I will bet you live in california where we mess around with the fuel during the summer. Try upgrading your fuel to high test for a few tanks and see if that stops the pinging. Premium gas costs more but you will get better gas mileage. Just be glad it is just pinging. I have problems with a Dodge that has me looking at Hyundai as a viable alternative. I certainly wish the factory would work the bugs out of Dodges before they hit the market

Try a set of colder plugs and see if it helps.
Autolight 3923 or the AP3923 with a .005 bigger
gap because of the platnuim tip

Also a 180 thermo over the 195 stock temp

Both these things will help ping

nope, I live in Wisconsin.

I doubt they change the gas around here...the
Diesel is changed though.

Larry, I might try the plugs and thermo, thanks.

Also, I'm not sure I made this clear before...it
only does it when it's warmed up. So, that
would make it NOT a timing issue, right?

Perhaps what I'm hearing isn't pinging...my
brother thought it sounded more like valve
clatter. Do valves clatter under load? 'cuase
they are pretty quiet otherwise.

Thanks for the help guys.

upgrading the gas to premium will not help..put the rating that is called for in your manual..the octane rating on gas is there to tell you how chemically stable it is and if he puts a 93 octane he will do nothing but burn the same amount if not more gas, because the higher the octane rating the more spark it takes to make it combust and if he doesnt have an ignition system (msd) with plugs and wires then the octane jump wont help him at all......as for the noise you are hearing is called abnormal combustion noise..this noise is characterized by a detonation knock or ping.this noise is most noticable durring acceleration when the engine is under load and during regular opperating temperatures.excessive detonation can be harmful to the engine.it is often caused by advanced ignition timing and substantial carbon build up in the combustion chamber that increases combustion pressure.what happens is the carbon gets so hot it causes the fuel to pre detonate.this problem can be fixed by using a rotary wire brush to clean out the combustion chamber.a malfunctioning EGR valve can also be the problem....all this information came out of my automotive technology book so i hope it helps you...

First, get your self a can of Combustion Chamber Conditioner from your local Mopar dealer. I prefer the spray rather than the pour type. Follow the directions on the can and then allow to set for a couple of hours after you completed the entire can. Restart, and drive normally for a few miles until the white smoke stops coming out of the tailpipe. Just a note, don't do this inside of the garage, and try to drive outside of congested traffic until the tailpipe clears up.

first of all dont do what that guy^^^^^^just said
because if you put that crap in your engine then its going to end up in your oil sump and cause it to clog the filter and let un filtered oil to pass through youre engine and it will cause your oil pressure to drop and then your engine will be royally screwed...

Ben, You simply don't know what you are saying. Take it from a certified Chrysler Master Tech and certified ASE Master Technician. Chrysler knows what they are doing with their product, and if you simply follow the directions and trust Mopar that they know what they are doing, you will do just fine. If you don't have the dealership training and knowledge to know about something you are flaming, please don't insult my or other people who come to this board's intelligence.

ben, I have used Mopar CCC for years in all my vehicles, even non-Mopar vehicles, and what you claim is absolutely senseless. Besides, the obvious way around your statement is to change the oil and filter right after using the CCC.

bskarger, I know this sounds crazy but I was having the same problem as you and I did all the usual stuff, cap, rotor, plugs, etc. What I think finally cured it was when I adjusted the TV cable. I don't know if it stretched or was never adjusted properly but it had about 1" of slack in it. Give it a try...it's free and at least you'll know it's adjusted properly.

Spillar,
I'm not much of an auto expert so what exactly is the tv cable?

bskarger,
I had problems with my dakota pinging really bad and have had to take it back for warranty work numerous times. To correct the pinging, I think the dealer messed with the timing because it is really sluggish now. If you ever figure out how to correct the problem, let me know.
Also, when starting out under load I get a clattering/knocking noise from the motor. Does any one have any idea what this is and how to fix it?

My truck used to ping constantly. I put in a 180 t-stat, 3923 plugs and use the mid grade gas. I now rarely hear it. Sometimes when accelerating hard up hill it will ping some until it downshifts.

Where did you guys get the Autolite plugs? I tried going to my local Pepboys but they looked at me like I was on crack when I asked for the 3923 plugs. Is there another part/reference number that the colder plugs are listed under?

Guys, thanks much for the continued help.

However, I'm still not sure that it IS pinging...I guess I'm just going by what others have said. To me, it sounds like a clatter, but it isn't consistent with RPM's or speed. It's kind of a random, popping/clatter when under load...usually happens after the truck shifts into a higher gear. When in overdrive, it does it almost constantly...since the RPM's are low, and any gas you give it tends to make the noise worse. Since it isn't systematic, to me that rules out valve noise. But, it only does it when it has reached operating temperature...so how could that be ping?

Frustrated...

I think I'll try the CCC anyway.

Here's what I know:

- still getting lower-than-before gas mileage (about 2-3 mpg's less)
- not burning oil
- run regular 87 octane
- new O2 sensor installed (post-cat)
- new TPS
- new Gov. Pressure Sensor, and trans temp sens
- all stock.

Thanks

Look for a small...may be very small vacum leak...may need a smoke machine to find it...what happens is that under a load the vacum leak leans out the fuel mixture and causes the pinging/detonation that you may or may not be hearing. Also have a look at the fuel pressure and volume as a loss of either of these will make the vehicle run lean also. If you have access to scanner hook it up and drive the vehicle and see what your long term and short term fuel trims are at if they are high..10 or more...than the vehicle is trying to compensate a lean fuel mixture

Could be a loose wrist pin in a piston. Usually, you will hear a wrist pin while on the gas, AND just as you let off, kind of a rattle sound. How many miles do you have on your Dak?

Also an exhaust leak will make ticking sounds as well. An exhaust leak will be audible when the engine is cold, usually, except when it's in a place that gets larger as parts warm up. This would happen quickly though as exhaust parts are the quickest to get heat up.

whitedakota2, that's not the noise, sorry. It's just not consistent enough to be that. That's why I think it's ping/spark knock.

Now, does ping/spark knock actually sound like a KNOCK, or is it kind of a snappy clatter/pop?

Damn, this is really hard to describe.

Dangerous...how to adjust TV cable?
