Went out and bought a 10" chrome Edelbrock air cleaner today and installed it tonight. I followed the instructions at this site: http://www.dakota-truck.net/UPGRADES/FABM/fabmdml.html

All went well except I learned the hard way that my S-bolt wasn't bent far enough...of course I had already shortened it and since I don't have a vice, it was a real bitch to bend that extra 1* or so. I didn't modify my breather hose though. I turned my air cleaner and ran the hose to the front so I wouldn't have to shorten it (in case I wanted to go back to my stock setup). So far I like it. I could definitely feel a difference. My engine growls when I really get on the gas. I also believe my acceleration has improved some.

I do have one question though...I don't think this is anything, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I know when I start it the hissing sound is normal, but when I'm driving (more at higher speeds) and my foot is steadily on the gas I hear an intermittent sucking sound. It sorta sounds like air sucking through a straw, then it quits for about 5 seconds and does it again. Could that be from the breather hose?

The new air cleaner won't affect emissions testing will it? I heard a rumor that within the next year or so they are going to start doing emissions checks here in Ohio. Also... now that I'm getting a bit more comfortable with working on my engine (I'm not very mechanically inclined) what are some suggestions on other mods? I already have the intake...I still need to buy a K&N air filter...sorta too broke at the moment, and I also have "dual turbo mufflers" as my dad was told. I wanted dual exhaust as a birthday present last year (before I knew it actually would make me lose low-end torque) and he had them put on for me at a local muffler shop. I prolly should try to figure out exactly what kind of exhaust my truck has...lol. Right now I'm wanting to get seat covers (I go four-wheeling a lot and I'm sick of staining my seats when my towel slips out from under me and I cover my seats in mud), a tonneau cover, a new hood from Cervinis, a v8 tb (or modified v6), rollpan (MAYBE), R/T rims and new tires, and prolly a different kind of exhaust...thinking Flowmaster 40 2.5" single in/dual out perhaps. Oh yeah...also prolly gonna get a Transgo shift kit as soon as I get the cash. It'll be before most of the stuff I listed on there.

Okay... quick recap since most of you prolly didn't read all that:) I had a question bout the intermittent sucking sound while travelling at higher speeds only when I'm giving it gas. Also wanted to know if that would affect emissions. I wouldn't think so, but you never know these days...Also suggestions for other mods (1.7 RRs are out of the question at this time...Dad would never go for em).

Sorry to bore ya'll... just psyched! That's all:)

And that would be my post :) But yeah everytime i go to start it i have that hissing noise too and its just the IAC opening and pulling some air into the engine to keep it idleing. Im considering putting a V8 TB on here pretty shortly cuz the sounds getting pretty annoying and people are wondering wtf is goin on :)

Oh don't worry...I did write a book, but since I ain't gettin any money out of you guys, I'm only giving you a few pages at a time:)

MikeS, the setup cost $19.99 at Autozone...from what I've seen they can be found at most Autozones. Add another buck or so for the 1/4" threaded rod that you'll need to make the S bolt. Also, unless you plan on using the paper filter that it comes with, K&N's are somewhere around $50. Being that I'm a poor kid who still mooches money off of daddy, I can't afford a K&N. The paper filter suits my needs for the time being, but once I get the cash I'll be upgrading.

My friend said he could tell the difference when I pulled up after school...he said my engine's a lil louder. I didn't think it was real noticeable unless I was really giving it gas, but I guess not.

So what is the consenus then on this mod versus a cold air intake with a cone filter?

Does the extra flow (if there is vs a cone type) make up for the fact that the air is hotter? I know I can run a hose up there but it still won't be as cool as a filter down in front.

Anyone done anything resembling a comparison?

Anyone cut a hole in their hood and put a scoop on it? (though I'm not planning on doing that quite yet to me 3 day old truck :) )
