I have a 87 3.9L carbed dakota, recently I had to replace my carb. being on limited funds I couldn't afford a $340 carb or the $160 electronic metering jet my carb needed. I went on the board and searched for options for my engine, I ended up going with the intake adapter from mopar and putting on a 600cfm eldebrock 4 barrel I had laying around. The truck runs great but the other night I quit on me. since my fuel gauge quit working and my speedo cable broke between fill ups I thought I ran out of gas. after waiting like an hour for my wife to show up with gas, it fired right up. at the gas station I went to fill it up and it only took 12 bucks. I put a hundred miles on it that day with no problems a friend seems to think that the computer is retarding or advancing my timeing to try to lean or rich the mixture since the new carb isn't electric. is this possible?? I was thinking more on the lines of vapor lock or something. maybe even a fuel filter problem although it hasn't done it since.
anyone know how these 87 SCC controlled motors work or what happens when you modify them like this? should I disconnect my O2 sensor? All the smog stuff has been removed long before I got the truck. any help would be great . thanks, jeff

Try using an MSD-6A ignition and just remove the old computor. This should work out fine barring you don't have an auto with an elctronic lock-up converter. If so you might be able to get aruond that without to much of a hassle.
