My oil gauge drops from 50lbs to 0 sometimes. I had my pump replaced earlier this year, but it didnt seem to fix the problem. It only seems to stop working when I need it the most. I'm young and i do stupid things. Friday night I went out with a group friends and one of them started racing, of course i knew my reg cab dak was the fastest in the pack against an Eclipse and Cherokee. I dropped the overdrive and was running 4500rpms and climbing hiting about 100 before going to overdrive. I look down and see the Check Gauges light come on. My worst nightmare. Its happened 3 times before. Oil Gauge was at 0. I change my oil about every 2,000 miles with Castrol Syntec 10w-30 with 5 quarts. I got to looking in the manual and it said 3.5 quarts with .5 in the filter.
Can I be running a quart over and could this cause this? How much oil do you guys use in your 3.9L v6s ?

Check your dipstick if you're wondering about being a quart over...that's what it's made for. Too much oil is a bad thing...

YOU MIGHT WANT TO ALSO CHECK YOUR INTAKE GASKET
TO DO THIS, REMOVE YOUR AIR CLEANER AND OPEN
THROTTLE BODY PLATES. LOOK DOWN THERE WITH A
FLASH LIGHT AND IF YOU SEE OIL IN THE BOTTOM
OF YOUR INTAKE THEN YOUR INTAKE GASKET NEEDS
TO BE REPLACED. THIS WILL ALSO CAUSE YOUR OIL
GAUGE TO READ ZERO AT TIMES

Oil in the bottom of the intake is a sign your bellypan gasket (paper) is shot. It comes in a kit with your new intake gaskets.

I vote for verns answer. Sounds like bad sending unit OR bad gauge. Either way I also recommend an aftermarket gauge. Especially if you plan on racing it.

Thinkin my dak takes more than 3.5 qts. Last Oil change used just shy of 5 Qts W/Filter.

How many miles on your engine? Entirely possible when you pull off the intake you will find the drain holes are partially plugged. Running the engine that high of RPM and you likely replaced the Oil Pump with the 40% more High Flow Pump that you are pumping Oil to the top of your engine faster than it can drain back. What little oil is left in the Pan is getting frothed by the crank and then you are pumping foam = What dadio said, No Oil Pressure. I'm presuming that when you let off the throttle for a few seconds the Oil Pressure returns, which leads me to believe you are not getting enough Drain down Vs. Pump up.

Either way it sounds like you need some spring cleaning on your engine. Start with a bellypan/Intake gasket change. Pull at least 1 of the valve covers to see if the top of the head is gummed up, Install a manual gauge. Use Engine flush treatment.

If you see sludge built up on your heads/top of motor I recommend flushing your engine twice. Add a can of engine flush to your Oil as recommended and change using a cheap oil. Drive normally for a couple days and then flush the engine again. If the second flush comes out looking like 3,000 mile Oil. Flush again! until you run Oil for about 3 days, add engine flush (following manufacture recomendations) and the Oil comes out reasonably clean. Once you get a reasonably clean engine switch to Synthetic for about 3K miles and USE A GOOD FILTER! NO Orange Frams! After that you SHOULD be clear to run a Synthetic Oil 5-7K miles.

Hope this helps & Good Luck,
Shank

Thanks for all of your help. My dipstick does read a bit over the full line. I replaced the pump with a $25 melling pump earlier this year. My engine has 88K miles on it. Uh OH, I always use the Orange Frams, hehe. When it gauge hits 0 i pullover Immediatly, turn the engine off and wait 5 mins and it shows pressure again.

I think im gonna try the flush thing a few times and be sure not to overfill. What filters do u recommend and is the Mobile 1 SuperSyn worth $20? Maybe I should mate a K&N oil filter with my K&N air filter.

Everybody has their preferences. I use a fram but I use the Tough Guard. Compare the Filtration. Orange Fram= 96% Single Pass & 98% Multi Pass, Grey Tough Guard =98%S.P., 99% M.P, Black Double Guard (Most Expensive) 96%/98% with added Teflon, Whooptie freakin dooooo.

Everybody has thier personal preference just like Oil. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic 20W50 only cause it's slightly thicker and doesn't leak as much, and the Fram TG16.

Hopefully everybody else will chime in with their personal preferences, This is just mine. Primarily only because of the Grip they put on the filters make for easier changing and they are the most available. I can buy 1 at 2Am if I want to @ Super Wal-Mart.
