Subject: Performance Upgrades?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey. I have a 97 Dak Sport 3.9L with a 3.92 Posi Rear end (stock). So far I have done no real mods to the engine.... I have dual exhaust (Cat-Back flowmaster) I am just wondering what would be the best upgrade to make it faster? I was thinking maybe a Throttlebody/K&N/Cold Thermostat... Anyone have any suggestions???

Hey since theres a fresh thread about performance parts for the six bangers...
Does anyone know of any sites or people that make performance cams or any of that type of stuff? is there a bore-out, or stroker kit or anything to that ordinary? also how hard is it to put a v8 TB onto an 89 dakota? Where would a good place to get headers be? I'm looking into either beefing this motor up to its limit, or putting a 340 in it, but the 340 seems like too much work compared to what it'd be worth to me. Thanks for any replys in advance

There is a stroker kit avalible

http://strokerkits.com/3_9_chrysler_stroker.htm

Sam at So Cal Dakota can custom grind any duration
and lift cam you want for the V6

http://www.socaldakota.com/

The fastman is also doing regrinds for what I hear
$130

http://www.thefastman.com/

Summit has headers for your 89

http://store.summitracing.com/

The V8 TB swap people talk about is for the
muti port 92 and up your 89 is throttle body
injection

BadAssDak
V8 or aftermarket TB
1.7 crower rollers
cold air intake
This will add from 20 to 30 hp at the rear wheels

After the intake side is done than the headers
will help, if you put the headers on first you
will see no gains

To Larry at J&J. Why do you say gains won't be noticed if the exhaust side is done first? I am asking because I went exhaust first.

its okay

It's simple, you cant get more air out if youre not putting more air in. Combustion engines need those three simple things for power 1. fuel 2.ignition 3. AIR

Hey, thanks for the info J&J, if only i knew jack about camshafts.... mainly what i'm looking for is more power through the rpms but keep my torque at the same time (if possible). What will the crower rockers do for me specifically? sorry for all the questins, i just want all the info before i start blowing cash.

To answer your question, Dakota SXT, its just like J&J said, how can your motor put more air out, if it cant suck any more air in? its just the way things work, for every action, there is a reaction.

Another question i have is, from what i understand stroker kits give the motor more low end torque, but how will it affect its top end?
thanks, Bryant

I thought I was the only "eccentric" out
there interested in hot rodding the under-
rated 3.9 V6. I have a '94 with a 5-speed
manual, A/C, weighing in at about 3500 lbs.
It has ported heads, a bit of cam, JBA headers,
Jacobs Pro Street ignition, modified factory
intake manifold, Modified V8 TB, 3" exhaust,
Aluminum pulleys, J&S Safeguard (knock
sensor), Superchips reprogramming (I don't
believe they do it any more, try ASE chips),
3.90 ring & pinion with Suregrip, a Powerdyne
Supercharger (same as a V8 application with
a few minor changes), and some other miscell-
aneous tricks. Dave Hughes at HUghes Engines
is fairly knowledgable about the Magnum Engines
and he ported my heads and ground me a cam-
shaft. He sold me the knock sensor, roller
rockers, and some other goodies as well was a
valuable source of information regarding my
project.
My little unobtrusive Dakota runs high 13
second quarter mile times with my current
mediocre computer mapping. Not too shabby...

I found headers on the web for $341 for V6 Daks. I think it was from JBA but not sure. If you already have duel exhaust it would be an easy upgrade.

The stroker kit will give you more power through
the entire rpm range will not affect top end just
make it stronger.

More torque is gained by more spinning mass,a
bigger charge in the cyl, to eggagerate what
would burn more a drop of gas or a half gallon

The only limiting facter in a stroker motor is
rpm but you don't need to worrie unless you plan
on turning over 6000 rpm

I very rarly rev mine over 5000

I plan on building another stroker 6 they have
a lot more power than a stock V6, I will be using
the stroker kit parts on this one.

You gain about 40 hp and 35 foot pouds of torque
that is solid and there to stay
