 Subject: build up v6 or get a v8

Hey,
I'm gonna start working on my 87 4x4 this summer, starting out by swapping the 3 speed auto for a 5 speed, wondering should i build up my 3.9 or get a 318. The prices are working out to be the same. Its just gonna come down to work. wondering if anyone has the 4 barrel intake, ported heads, headers, high compression pistons, roller rockers, cam, for their 3.9. I heard together these make about 220hp/310ftlbs. Those numbers are really close to a stock 318, wondering if the 3.9 will hold up for off roading. If i do the v8 swap ill be looking for a donor truck. thanks
