I just picked up a '93 4x4 Dakota with the V6, manual and 108K miles. Every once in a while the check engine light will come on while cruising. It blinks out the following codes: 12, 45, and 32. I'm not worried about the code 12. Code 32 indicates there is a problem with the EGR system and I'm checking into what might be causing that. However, the code 45 has me baffled. The book I have says it is a malfunction in the transmission OD solenoid circuit. Doesn't that seem strange for a manual transmission? Seems to me that that would only apply to auto trans.

Any suggestions?

EGR

First check all the electrical connections on the
EGR transducer. unplug them and check.

Check all the vacume lines on the actual valve
and transducer.

Reset the comp and see if it comes up again

I don't list a code 45 for the 93 that's a weird
one.

Thanks Larry. I'll do that with the EGR problem.

The code 45 is weird. Is there an easy, no cost way, of clearing the codes without cycling the ignition 50 times?

Thanks again,
David

Yes reset.

Disconect the neg batt cable go in the truck and
hold the key all the way to start for 30 sec.

Now turn the key off and reconect the Batt it will
clear all the codes

12 is start of diag.
45 may be end of test on 93, I ran into a 96 that
flashed 56 at the end every time should be 55 end
of tests

Great! Thanks for the info on clearing the codes.

I get the 45 after the 12 and before the 32. I then get 55 at the end. So it goes 12, 45, 32 and 55. Is there any order that the codes come up in? For example, was the 45 the last code that was stored, or the first?

Thanks again!

Take it to Auto Zone and they will pull the codes and tell you what they are.

And if Larry don't know and if A.Z. with there computer network can't tell you I'd give the dealer a ring.

EGR light

My 87 Dakota "check EGR" light came on. I replaced the EGR Valve (it was needed) but the light will not go out.

I disconnected the battery, looked for a reset button (like the check engine light), and have searched on line to no avail.

Any ideas?

There is no reset button. You could have a clogged EGR orifice, or a vacuum hose or bad electrical connection.
