Subject: replaced batter/now chk eng. lite

My battery was dead in the morning a couple days ago, it could barely spin the starter. Didn't surprise me because it has been tougher to start the last few weeks and I was figuring it was getting close to time for a new one.

Anyways the problem. After I ran out and got a replacement and installed it, the truck fired right up BUT it initially would not hold an idle. Took I guess anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute before it would idle on its own. It sounded kind of rough too upon start up. I have not had this happen to me before on any vehicles just changing the battery. Well after i let it idle for about 5 minutes or so, I took off to drive it and the check engine light came on and i immediately noticed the shifting characteristics of the auto tranny did not seem right. It seems to be slipping or shifting very late at only 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. WOT seems like it was before I guess, but at normal throttle positions the thing is bucking and jerking like crazy at times, redlining and the check engine light will not go out.

This all happened directly after the battery change. The truck ran great before it and has for quite some time. I have a 99 3.9L slt cc auto. Any suggestions

Reset the computer,

discnnect the Neg batt cable go in the truck and
hold the key all the way to start and hold it
there for 30 sec. Now turn the key off and
reconect the batt.

It will take a few hundred miles to relearn your
driving habbits and run fine.

Turning it over with the low batt will set some
codes off, reset

Larry,

I reset the comp. and the light came back on so I went down to autozone to get it scanned and the code # 720 The Output Shaft Speed Sensor doesn't match the reported vehicle speed, came up so the guy sold me a sensor but really could not explain exactly where it went.

Questions,
Is this the sensor that is behind the tranny pan 8 or 10 inches but right in front of the crossmember on the drivers side?

Will I be losing tranny fluid when I pull the old sensor out? Anything I need to put on the O ring?

thank you

Thats it just put a little grease or oil on the
o ring

Might lose a couple drops of fluid but it will not
come pouring out.

Thanks Larry,

Must have been a coincidence that it happened same time as the battery. Thought I read before on the board that this sensor tends to get crudded up because it is magnetized or something and that it will cause poor shifting performance. I'll have to tackle it this weekend. Thanks again for your help Larry.

Ive had a problem before when i disconnected the battery then tried to start the engine..wouldnt idle. Many dont know that if you disconnect the battery then try to start it you have to hold the key on for 10 seconds to let the sensors relearn before cranking.Might not have been your problem...but helpful to know

Thanks Jeff will keep that in mind.

Larry,

Tried to replace sensor but it turned out not to be the right one, so I cleaned the crud off the existing sensor and reinstalled. Seems the shift points are fine now but maybe slightly higher than I originally remember them. I did reset the computer again but the check engine light still came on.

Questions:
Does this mean my sensor is still bad even though I cleaned it?

Do you know the correct part # for this sensor if that is my problem?

The dealer replaced the sensor that causes the ABS/brakelight/speedo issues about 9 months ago. Could it be this sensor again? That one is on the rear differential right?

thank you.
BA

P.S. I had it on level ground and the ATF did come pouring out. I had a sock ready to shove in there anyway. ;)

Yes the sensor could still be bad, that would
explain the higher shift points.

Don't know the part # but you can get the # from
a dealer.

are you still getting the same code.
