I've searched the archives pretty thoroughly and I haven’t really seen any concrete answers, accept for “they all do that.” I’m sure they do to some degree, but I think mine is worse then the ones mentioned in the archives. If I get on the gas, or let off, in pretty much any gear, there is a very pronounced clunk you can hear and feel quite well. When I have it in four-wheel it does not do it. Is it true “do they all do this,” I find it hard to believe because it makes every-day driving rather cumbersome… My first thought is the u-joints in the drive shaft, but I haven’t gotten around to check them yet, what is the best/easiest way to do so? Also, what other things could it be, what else should I check out? I really appreciate any suggestion or comments, thanks a lot.

"They all do that" is a cop-out. Mine doesn't. It clunked on turning a couple of years ago, it turned out to be the ball joints, which I got fixed. No more noise.

At first I was going to say that it sounded like you needed to replace the chicken under your hood, but you corrected yourself before I had a chance. Damn. ;-)

I can understand the frustration of wanting to know "why" instead of hearing "they all do that." It's one of the reasons I found this site - after being repeatedly answered with shrugged shoulders, or "they all do that" when I was on my third catalytic convertor, I researched the reasons why they go on my own. I also found a new dealership, one that does know.

My dealership told me that it is the clutch springs. The springs on the clutch disc slide when you push on the clutch. This is what i was told by my dealership i thought they were giving me alot of bs. I asked my uncle and he told me that could possibly be the clutch. They told me the only way to fix this is a new clutch which is never under warrenty. They just love screwing us with warrenty parts dont they

So far every GenIII Automatic does it. As far as people I know directly who owns one, they all have it happen from time to time. One guy I know changed his rear sway bar bushings and when body lifted the extenders on the bed were changed, it went away. As to what Lesley was saying on the ball joints, yeah the dakota ball joints suck. But I think the sound comes from the rear of the truck for most people. If anyone ever does pin exactly what the problem is, it sure would make a lot of Dak owners happy. Greg
