Just wondering what's considered to be alot for a well-maintained truck. I heard that this is a great engine that goes well over 100K, and have even seen it go past 200K.

What signs did you noticed that made you replace the tensioner? I just replaced mine because it started making some clicking sound now and then. It was $80 so I hope I did the right thing. I dont know if this is relevant to the thread because I have the 5.2 liter, but I only replaced the tensioner and water pump. Both were done after 100k. Before that, nothing ever! (plugs, wires, oil, cap, and rotor of course)

Mark the 318 and 3.9 V6 share a lot of the same parts
Almost everything on the front of the motor is the same
Vibration damper and timing chain also the same. Hec
they even have the same rods and pistons as the 318

My tensioner was doing the same thing at only 60,000
miles but I just replaced the pulley and bearing not the
whole assy, you can get either from Chrysler.

I bought a 1990 Dak 4X4 with over 250,000 miles on it
and it still runs good, the body I just cant believe the
shape its in, no rust and just 2 little dents.

The oil pressure is like 10 pounds at idle and it
burns about a quart of oil every 1000 miles, I
am holding off a while and plan on putting the
4.0 stroker crank in this truck. I have the crank
but I got a lot of hell for all the money I stuck
in my 95. So to avoid getting my ears blown
out I will wait a few months anyway,

I will let you guys know when I put the motor
together with a lot of pics so you all can see
what the inside of these look like and what to
check and how so if you ever decide to tackle an
overhaul yourself you will have a good idea what
is involved.

With good maintenance these trucks will last a
long time.

My 98 ext cab Dakota with v-6 has 128,000 miles on it. I replaced the belt and tensioner at 98,000 other than that and a front shocks I have had no repairs. I do have a rattle in the front suspension on wash board roads that has defied all my attempts to locate. the ball joints are tight, and all suspension bolts and nuts are tight. I don't know where else to look. I still like the truck just have to turn up the radio to drown out the rattle.

The Original engine survived 207K before I had an ignition problem. THE WHOLE BOTTOM EXPLODED! I sent the #2,3 & 5 rods out the Oil Pan in different directions. Looked like somebody put 3 rounds of 12ga Buckshot into it!

Jeepers it's almost impossible to get the V6 Oil Pan! Had to special order it from Wisconsin. $80 freakin bucks + Shipping!!!!!!

But it is back on the road..... Sorta (Tranny disfunctions again)

Good luck, Synthetic Oil and Regular Tune-ups

thanks for the help on my rattle. I will try replacing the sway bar bushing first since my shade tree garage probably won't handle changing the A-arm bushings. agin thanks for your help you are a blessing to all dakota owners.

145,000 on my 1993 4x4 V6. Runs strong and doesn't burn any oil. Needs a new timing chain, has a warped brake drum, needs a new exhaust, and needs to bushings in the front end. Otherwise, it is great! I tow our Seadoo to the lake almost every weekend with it.

I would check the boneyards for a used one off a
wrecked truck it would only be about half price.

Than just take it and get the system recharged

Ya Mark I could do a how to, don't know exactly
when I am going to start the project yet.

Right now someone is using the truck untill they
settle with there ins company over a stolen truck
some bull about waiting 60 days to see if there
truck is recoverd before they pay.

Now he wants to buy the truck but I don't want
to sell it, than I would have to find another
one and this thing is like new inside and out.
