I finally installed the K&N FIPK in my '98 Dak
3.9. Part Number 57-1509 (listed for V8), from
Summit Racing.
I meticulously studied everybody's installation
notes here (thanks, DakotaDan and all!). I was
concerned I would have to move the cruise
control, but it was fine in the stock location.
Then there were the reports of inferior
materials from K&N - again, my kit is okay.
The only mod I had to make was flip the FIPK
saddle bracket around to attach at the
rearward side of the tube and bend the twist
bracket (attaches the saddle bracket to the
engine) for a perfect fit.
All in - no busted parts, no blood, no swearing;
all in all, a good morning project.

Hey Dennis

Sounds great you'll really like stomping down on it now. Might watch the bolt on the airhat/TB mine loosened a little after about 2k miles.
I'm looking at headers & TB next ;) ;)

Hey DakotaDan how much louder(inside the cab) is your truck with the addition of the FIPK and the Dynomax?
I'm condsidering those two mods but I'm scared it's going to sound like a chainsaw in the cab at highway speeds.

Thanks

To put it short and sweet, take your factory sound and add a very mild (V8 like) rumble to it and that's all you get in the cab ! :) Sometimes you can hear the FIPK sucking air but it's not noisy.
I started with the DynoMax #17733 this muffler is only 18.5" long it's pretty quite but around town you get a little buzzing (it's not a ricy buzz) at certain RPM's, on the road at cruising you don't notice it. I lived with that for about a month and ordered a # 17748 this muffler is 25.5" long and to my ears is great. I just drove to FL at x-mas cruising 70-80 mph didn't bother me at all in the cab.

I'd be glad to e-mail you pictures of my installs if you want .

You want something loud just put a set of Autoventshade Ventvisors on your truck !
Just took mine off and put WeatherTech's on .

Thanks DakotaDan, so it looks like the #17748 is going to be a better choice for what I'm looking for, quiet and not Buzzy!!

Thanks

DakotaDan,

I notice for your 2001, you have the 1517 K&N. I have the 2000 Dakota 3.9, so the 1517 is what I need?

I'm sure you've probably answered this a million times--so my apologies--but did you have to make any modifications to the cruise control (assuming you have cruise control)?

Thanks,

David

The 1517 kit has the parts to relocate the cruise control. I wont swear to it but I think 2000 was the year they changed the cruise location you might have to pop some hoods to check out the location of a 2001. Go to this K&N page and you can download the instructions and photos.

Also I would be glad to send you photos of my install if you want, I did make one little change on my install but the kit will work just like it comes out of the box.

Thanks to all who replied, this post answered most of my questions but I have a few more.

1.) I am not trying to get more speed out of my truck, I mean a little more quickness in merging or passing situations would be nice, but not necessary. I own a truck because I pull things, I own a 4x4 because often I would be stuck without it. So I am trying to find modifications that will provide me with some more power.
--Am I on the right track with modifying the intake and the exhaust?
--Will I lose torque by changing exhausts?
--When I started researching this there were several things I did not want to sacrifice. The first was noise, which by reading this it would not seem to be a problem. The second was fuel economy, if anything this should improve economy, right? There is no reason to go higher than 87 octane after these mods is there?

Thank-you for any information you could provide

Jim
