I've been looking at buying a dakota for a little while now, and i've decided to go ahead and get one, but now I don't know if I should get a V6 or a V8. My 2 deciding factors are performance potential and gas mileage. So I need your help guys. I know the V8's are easier to get power out of, but how much more gas do they use than a V6. I once heard that they are actualy about the same when it comes to gas mileage. Also I'm probably gonna get a 97', maybe a 98', so anyone with one of these please post what kind of mileage your getting.

Thanks
Alex

Some claim better mileage with the v-8. With that said, go with the v-8 if it's in your price range. I wish I would have. Better yet, get a Ram diesel and get the Bank's Baby. Power and mileage. Can't beat that!

I have a V6 and I get about 14-15 around town, and about 18-21 on the highway (depending on the type of highway). Two months ago I drove 3 hrs. to San Diego and got 21.4 mpg on the way down and 21.2 mpg on the way back. That is with a dynomax muffler and a drop-in K&N. Hope that helps.

I've owned three dodges 98 single cab V-6, 99 1500 ram 5.9, 97 Cummings single cab 2500. And I would say that the V-6 and V-8 are close I got about 15-19 in city and 19-24 on highway with V-6. V-8 5.9 gas drinker you can actually watch the gauge move as you drive, 14-18 city and 18-21 highway. But Cummings 5.9 straight six diesel is loud but you get 17-19 city and 18-25 highway and the power/ torque. Plus drive it 999,999 miles then replace the piston sleaves and drive it 999,999 again.

do your self a fav and get the v8. the v6 is worthless. if your just goin to use it as a daily driver and dont plan on having any fun at all then get the v6 that would be perfect for you...but if you like to have alittle fun and dont wana turn your head when when anything even remotely quick pulls up next to you then get the v8. gas would be just about the same in the long run if you dont drive like a race car driver. the v6 will downshift to get up hill the v8 wont. u can mod the 6 up all you would like but it will still be slow as anything so do your self the fav and get the 8

I agree with getting a V8. I have a 98 Ram Quad cab with the 5.9 and a 03 Dakota Quad cab with the 3.9, they get the same miles per gallon. The Ram has 56k miles and the Dakota has about 5k.

I should have had a V8

I have the V6 and i'm perfectly happy with it. Obviously the V8 has more power, but with the difference in price you can mod your truck quite nicely. My 6 banger is faster then any stock V8, save the R/T. Certainly an equally modded V8 would be faster, but that's more money too. As far as off road capability, i wouldn't see any difference what so ever except that with the V6 you could stay out longer between fillups. I tow my 3500lb. boat regularly just fine, but If your going to be towing alot and often then the V8 is better. It's all in what you intend to use it for.

exactly, you v8 guys screwed up when you passed the 10's up eh?

a v8

Your right, they are slow, but with a few mods they open up a lot. Same with the v8's. Both come very restricted from the factory. A moderatly modded v6 will be faster then a stock v8. It's not a secret, and shouldn't be suprising to anyone.

If you do the right mods and make the engine run
more effeciant you can get better milage with any
motor,

I would say it depends on what you plan on using
the truck for, heavy loads and trailer towing the
V8 has more torque

Just driving the V6 is fine and with a few mods
can be very fuel effeciant.

I am pulling 22 to 24 with my V6 4X4

After installing a v8 throttlebody, cold air intake, msd 6a, super conductor wires, blaster coil and bosch platium +4's, and flowmaster 70 series, I getting 16/17 combined city/freeway and 20/21 freeway at the posted freeway speeds here in Washington State.

By the way, I failed to mention on the 93 Dakota 4x4, I have a K&N air filter, Jacobs Pro-street ignition, Flowmaster 70 series, Ported and Polished Throttlebody. I have used the Auto 3924, and recently switched to the Autolite 3923's at the suggestion of Larry from J&J Auto (the guy gives good suggestions). I recently found out the Belly pan gasket on the intake "beer keg" has been leaking The oil consumption has been about a quart for every 1000 miles. I understans that cnan affect power and mileage. It idles ok and runs great.

Larry, I purchased the Autolite 3923's for 97 v6, I will install them when I get the time. That's been the problem, hopefully it will happen soon.

Like these other guys say, it depends on what you're going to do with it and how you drive. I bought an '02 V6 SLT a couple months back with 26K on it, bone stock, automatic, power- everything. I'd been driving a 4-banger for 17 years, and was accustomed to pretty good mileage, so it came as a complete shock when I got 14.5mpg the first couple of tanks.

I replaced the stock air filter with a K&N dropin (not the FIPK - just the filter element), AND finally figured out how to get it into overdrive at 30mph. You wouldn't think that a simple air filter element would have that much effect, but I was immediately able to tell a difference in the low end, and if I tromp on it at 55-60 to pass somebody or hit the freeway, it SOUNDS like a V8 and goes pretty good. That high throughput filter more than doubled the amount of air available.

Now, I'm at 18.5 in town, and 22.5 on the road. It is at the dealer's right now getting a small oil leak fixed (oil pan gasket) and having the gas filler gasket replaced (was causing my MIL light to come on). The dealer said that they've had quite a few of these bad gaskets, by the way, and both of these repairs are warranty repairs.

While I was waiting for the wife to come pick me up, I wandered around the lot looking at the new ones, and the V6's are posted at 18 city, 19 highway. One of the Quadcabs with the big V8 was posted at 12 city, 15 highway. I figure that I'm getting better than the new V6's now, so I'd better shut the puck up, and quit whining about it!!

If it's city driving, it won't matter much which way you're going, because the V6 and the 4.7 V8 will give you about the same mpg. If it's highway driving, the six will probably do just fine for you. I haven't had any problems hauling what I want to haul or tow - this thing seems like it'd pull a tank.

I figure that I'll try another thing or two to pump the mileage up later on, but right now I'm waiting to see what J-and-J-Larry's mileage experiment is and what his results are.
