Im looking to buy either a 95+ s-10 4.3L or a dakota V-6 ext cab. Everyone I ever talk to says get the chevy (which is what I have always owned). What are the reliability issues with the Dakota that scares everyone off?

What can I expect to replace after say 100k miles?

It's more like what you can expect to replace before 100k ................

warped rotors

ac evap. leaking

bellypan gasket

idle problems

weather striping rusting on doors

cats burning out at 15-30k

o2 sensors

manifold leaks...no gaskets from factory :-O

ball joints

squeaks & ralttles in the front end

etc. etc. etc.........

Better learn to hit the sauce if you buy one of these Daks. It might take the edge off when you need to get it serviced more than you would think.

Cheers.

My '98 ext-cab Dakota has 127,000 miles and has only had one repair for a leaky thermostat housing and that was under waranty. I have the original rotors and am only on the second set of pads.

I have 147,000 Plus miles on mine, had the truck since it had 3 miles and have ony replaced the clutch on it, i didn't need it but i went up to a centerforce b/c i wanted to.

The guy with the warped rotors (don't ride the brake, i stil have my original ones and im hard on them and haven't had any problems), the cat if its failingit's covered under warranty. If the truck was really that big of a lemon you can take it back to the dealer and they can get you a new one.

I dont agree with anything bad said about the Dak! But my best friend has a '95 S10 Blazer and he has had to replace almost everything you can imagine on it! It has 130,000 miles on it. Seems like almost every week there is something new he has to replace. For all the money he pour into that thing he could own a brand new truck!

99 CC 3.9 slt plus

I bought this thing new and watched it leak (from almost everywhere) all over my brand new driveway after only 6 mos or so.

Pinging from about 12k (dealer fixed and turned it into a dog)
Rear main seal at 38K
CD radio at 36K
waterpump at 60k
Parking brake release broke off in hand 40k
speed sensor 65k
back up lights quit working ?k
tranny problems starting 70k
leaks when rains
center console fell off
bicycle could outrun this thing
intermitant stalling problems
defective paint it spots
creak rattle and pops
wears tires unevenly
warped rotors
squeaky brakes with orig pads

Im sure there are other things I can't remember, the dealership did fix some items when under warranty but alot of things popped up right after the 3 years were up. I do like the new Rams though and likely will get one soon. Dodge has by far the best looking trucks and I am sure the quality is on par with Ford/GM so may as well go with looks!

I am happy with my 97. I have 220k and am on original motor and trans. no smoke, good compression---still dust fords and that's with 31.50 tires on a 2x....

problems--customer service. Dodge sucks! at 20k rotors warped. asked to turn and was flatly denied. took up the chain to MI. was denied. went through CA arbitration and they were ordered to repair everything downstream of the master cylinder (hoses) calipers, rotors, etc. to the tune of 1800. I even asked the service manager---wouldn't the $ 6.00 to turn the rotors been better? he said he would have liked to but DODGE told him no---but since you will be buying a truck with no warranty (most likely) no worries.

this site is awesome. flush your heater core, and radiator....these have small passages and WILL gunk up. put on some new Raybestos rotors (no need to spend $$$ on powerstop etc) and QC pads. I have had on for 50k miles now no probs.

my ball joints went to 200k and I just got worried hearing about the durangos and their probs, and front end was a little loose---got the Moog replacements installed for $ 500 was lazy but beats 1600 of new arms from dealer.

I have gone through 3 power steering hoses in the 7 years and 220k miles (got truck in 96) but at $ 50.00 no biggie.

and at 100k changed timing chain and tensioner because it sounded like a diesel.

You will have little nickel and dimes, but by in large no major problems.

My friend has a 98 Blazer with 6. he has has to replace tranny, head gaskets, ac compressor and main computer. All in less than 77k, and he babies it and has it washed (and burped) every week.

Another friend has a 00 s-10 with 6. his had the same computer go out, and did a neat trick. Apparently in CA chevy still uses an air pump on that model. There are one way valves that pump air into the ex man.s to dilute exhaust with air....well the pre cat went out and clogged the cat. The heat backed up and burned out the one way valves and let heat and fire travel upstream, melting his battery, radiator tank and all hoses to the aux air pump, and unit itself.

I was bummed because I was always a chevy guy--still have 72 shortbed 4x4. I urged them to buy them and they turned out to be pieces of sh&%t.

haven't heard much about Fords of the same age, but considering the alternatives I will keep my dakota.
