Subject: Clutch Shudders in Reverse
IP: Logged

Message:
Recently had to replace freeze plugs in rear of engine block. While I had tranny off I replaced the clutch. I am now noticing alot of shudder in the entire truck when I shift into reverse. (sorry, 98 Dodge Dakota V6 3.9 manual) I also notice a little shudder when shifting into first. There appears to be not shudder when shifting while moving, only when stopped going into 1st or Reverse. Any Ideas? Thanks

how many miles on it? normally, when replacing the clutch, the throwout bearing and pressure plate should also be replaced. you should also check the flywheel. if it shows some discoloration, heat marks, you should have resurfaced or replaced the flywheel also.

110k miles.
In retrospect (and after reading other places) It is more than likely the flywheel. (I did see the discoloration you spoke of) Thanks for the help. Though I am not sure that I want to take the tranny off again so, I think I will just wear the clutch in...

You could be looking at premature clutch failure.
If you plan on selling the truck soon leave it alone. If you wanna keep it, take it apart and resurface the flywheel. Just my 2 cnets.
