Subject: Why not switch to a v8 airhat?
IP: Logged

Message:
Awhile back I bought a used V8 throttle body. I cut and smoothed off the horns that surround the two holes so it looks like a fastman throttle body. Im still using the same airhat that comes stock with on a 3.9 v6 engine. My question is, wouldn't it be better to use a v8 airhat because of the 4 inch diameter that it uses over the 3 inch v6 airhat? Some times when I smash the gas I hear a loud pop coming from my engine. I believe the v8 throttle body might be sucking in too much air all at once that the 3 inch tubing that im using for my intake can't handle. Does anybody agree with this, or am I completly wrong. If im right where is good place to purchase a v8 airhat?

I forgot to mention about switching all the pipes that make up the intake to 4 inch diameter. My truck stumbles when i florr it from a stand still. I believe when the butterflies open its ready for all this air but cant get it from the smaller piping. I dunno. All opinions and help are appreciated.

I believe it stumbles because of the TPS sensor. Read more at intensedakota.com

Many have built there own Air Intakes or went with an aftermarket K&N,Intense Performance etc...The K&N (part# 57-1517-1)is for a V8 ,but works well on the 3.9.I'm sure the others will work on either a V8 or V6 too ,but I'm not up on their specifics.

you stumble because a ported v8 TB is to much for a mild V6. if you ported the tq step out of it you opened it up to almost a full 50mm, stock v6 is only 44mm.

5.9 &5.2 v8 & 3.9 v6 use the same air hats, boxes and filters

stock V6 throttle body is 46mm. Stock V8 throttle body is 48 at the blades... even if you cut the torque step out, it's still the same at the throttle blades.

i would check your TPS voltage like suggested

Alright Ill recheck my TPS voltage, but would it be too much to switch everything to a 4 inch diameter or am I just wasting my time considering that?

Go ahead and switch the air hat the more air you
get the better you are.

Your TPS voltage shoud be between .5 to .7 volts
is where they work the best once you start pushing
over .74 you can run into problems where your
truck will race for a while after you let off
the gas.

Intense, the V6's came with throttle bodies
anywhere from 42mm plates with a 40mm torque
step to 46 with a 44mm step, my 95 4X4 had a
40mm step.

So you could have anything between 40 to 44mm on
the V6's

The stock V8's had 50mm plates with a 48mm step
and Troy should be ok as long as he did not remove
the torque step.

Check your TPS voltage and you should also check
your injector sync if you are running a -6 it
could explan the pop you get. but the computer
should adjust to the new air volume in about 200
miles and stop doing that.

Im sorry Larry Could you please tell me how to check
my injector sync? Right now i think im running .72 on my TPS voltage. Am i supposed to take the voltage when its at WOT or with the butterflies closed? So you are saying it would be alright to use 4in diameter piping for my intake. That wouldn't decrease the performance at all???

.72 good should test with throttle closed key on
but it don't need to be running. from the looks
of it you did it ok and .72 is a good voltage to
be at.

4" is fine it will give you better flow and can
only help not hurt performance.

Injector sync, rotate your motor untill its on
Top Dead Center 0 on tha vibration damper be sure
the rotor is pointing near the #1 wire, always
rotate clockwise if you pass it up go around 2
more times untill its right on.

If the rotor is pointing in the oposite drection
you are 180 off and need to rotate the crank 1
turn.

TDC Compresion stroke

32mm on the center bolt on the crank

Now, remove your dist cap there should be a line
on the plastic pickup plate thats marked cyl,
look straight down over the rotor and center the
button over the line, with your finger lightly
push the rotor counter clockwise to remove any
play just light presure.

The hold down bolt you need to losen to adjust the
dist is 1/2 and is not easy to get to, either a
short box wrench or a 1/2 flex socket on an
extention or a gm dist wrench will work.

If you do not have the line you need to use a
scanner or a volt meter and a differant procedure
every one I have worked on had the cyl line but
some aftermarket replacements don't.

All the dist does is tell the injectors when to
paulse, the factory sets them anywhere from 0 to
-6 but they run better on the + side.

The dist also distrubutes the spark but the timing
is controlled by the computer rotating the dist
only will change the injector timing not spark
timing.

Uh, guys, the airhats are the same. The size and shape of the throttle bodies are the same, it's just the bores and plates that differ.
