I have a 89 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9 v6. It has an
auto tranny with overdrive. A mechanic I know told
me to turn overdrive off every time I drive it
because that year was known for the overdrive or
somethign to go out.
I am wondering if there is any truth in this, or if this
is something that is bad to do and will surely cause
damage????

No No, there is a problem with ALL the years and over drives, lol. Umm when you toat a load turn it off, if you feel the truck shifting in and out of over drive trurn it off, and if you have a strong head wind turn it off. The problem is them over heating.... If you baby the trans it will last longer than expected. Change the fluid and filter every 50K, only use MOPAR ATF fluid in it... Make usre you get the correct mopar ATF fluid. Also see about adding an inline cooler.

Are you asking how your turn over drive on? uhh push the button or put it in the D with ther circle around it..... If you do this and it still does not work check and make sure the plug on the trans is pluged in and on the back of the button... If you still have problems check the wires... then after that if you have a prob its prolly in your trans.
