Subject: Stock V8 TB size?
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok, how big is it: 48 or 50mm. I heard 48 then just saw someone say 50. Which one. I was going to get a used one and port it myself but not if it's too damn big. Bernd says it's not so what's the deal?

It's 48mm. 50mm if you remove the step and clean up the bores.

For the blades? 49.75mm is what the 2001 360 measured with a caliper. Measured a customers while I had it off for cleaning.

I've got a 2001 R/T TB sitting in my garage...the blades are not 49.75mm.

The blade size isn't going to give you the accurate bore size though...remember the torque step in the bores.

It's not as easy as measuring the blade(s).

So it would be best not to clean up the bores?

Next customer TB I have off I will measure again. I am measuring the bore size just below the throttle blades when the TB is off of the truck.

CBS: You can clean up the bores but be careful not to enlarge the diameter where the blades are. If you do, you'll need to swap out to larger blades. Removing the step (or just cleaning it up a bit) normally does the job as well as some air-horn work.

All I planned on doing was cutting off the air horns and rounding off the edges around the bore to make a smoother flow. Figured I might as well before I install. So, will this make it a 50mm and thus be too big. I was under the same impression that the size of the hole was the size of the TB and that was all there was too it. I will still get the V8 TB. Just want to clarify whether or not it will be okay on my application to do the minor cleanup. I don't have many mods as you can see.

cbs,
i did the same thing...used my dremel on the top part and grinded the whole top flat...then i used the fine grit to smooth everything out and round off the bores...then i got the polishing attachment and smooth the bores real well...flows a whole lot better...sounds cool too with the intake..

If you just remove the airhorns, radius and smooth the bore openings (about a 45 degree angle), and remove some of the step, it's still the stock size but will flow slightly better. Makes for much better throttle response as well.

To enlarge the actual bore size requires larger blades enlarging the bore from top to bottom.

Awesome. I wasn't planning on enlarging the bores because I knew that would be too big and would require the larger blades. That much I was aware of. Thanks alot. I guess I will clean it up when I get it.
