Which is better,

1. Getting a new cam and getting better 1.6 RRs
or
2. Leaving the Cam and putting 1.7 RRs in?

I;ve Heard of some reworking needed for 1.7s, big job to do?

Thoughts Experiences?

It's a give and take on either choice.

(1) Defintely worth the effort but requires tearing into the engine

(2) Works very well and doesn't require tearing into the engine

The only item you have to do is remove the oil baffles under the factory valve covers...or, if you can get away with it...dimple the section where they're hitting the baffle.

bernd,
you told me that if i wanted the bigger camshaft that you sold with the 1.7rr i have that i would need to do a lot of head work...if i went with the smaller cam would i still need to do all of that trash?

thanx,
intense

No, there's not a lot of head work required...it's the guides and valves that you have to worry about.

With a larger cam (example: .512"/.512" lift) you'll need to cut the guides down a tiny bit for better clearance under higher RPM's.

Most aftermarket cam shafts are ground to use the factory-style 1.6:1 ratio rockers. Moving to 1.6:1 Rollers won't cause any problems at all.

With 1.7:1 rockers and a cam with .460" - .480" lift...it's recommended to change over to H/D springs and retainers (.500" lift or higher is a requirement with the springs and retainers and 1.6:1 or higher rockers).

For the stock cam, the 1.7's work very well...with an aftermarket (higher than factory lift cam), they will also give you more lift but make sure the heads are setup for that. There's also the issue of the valves possibly tapping the pistons at higher RPM's with 1.7:1 rockers and a high lift cam.

Any reputable machine shop will do the minor maching required for you.

What kind of performance increases am i looking at for each? Hp? Torque?

I'm mainly a person that goes light to light, i enjoy burning those that think i have a wimpy V6.

So which do you think would be better for this application?

wow, sounds like i will just stick with the 1.7rr!
on to a different subject...is the plenum divider on the intake the part that splits the intake in half? i had to have my intake manifold replaced (under warranty) a while back and the mechanic asked me if i wanted to get it cut back a couple of inches! i didn't know anything about it back then but do you recommend it? will it kill any low end that we might have?

thanx bernd,

YES....Definitely cut the plenum divider (no more than) 1.5" back. While you're at it, smooth out the runners (don't cut them shorter though) and radius the injector bosses on the head side.

It didn't kill any bottom end on mine...even before the nitrous or supercharger. (Did it about two years ago.)

It really helps wake up the V6's from 2500rpm on up.

everything that i've done doesn't seem to do anything until after 2500 rpm....i think 4.10 gears will be coming to fix that soon...just to help get me out of the hole

DakKid: Yes, we carry camshafts for the V6's.

IntenseDak39: If you're running the factory 3.55:1 gearing, that could very well be the problem. The V6's run best with 3.90 gearing.

probably the 1.7rr...not only are you increasing the valve lift but you are loosing friction with the rollers...stock are stamped..

i would suggest the jba headers first with your other mods but the rr were a little easier to put in.
