Does anyone know if I have to gap these plugs different from that of the orginal stock plugs.. I have forgetten but I think they were 0.039. Everything is stock except an air intake on these plugs. I put 8.0mm wires on put nothing fancy just a performance Autolite set. Couldn't afford the MSD ones for $150. I sure get upset when I read what everyone does to their trucks in the U.S. I look at your prices and think hey thats cool. Then after slamming down the phone from my local Auto parts stores I remember....OH YEAH DAMN I LIVE IN CANADA everything is at least twice as much. Oh well if anyone knows about the plugs let me know. Thanks

As far as I know, Dak gaps are suppost to be 0.035. I installed an aftermarket ignition and regaped my plugs to .045 and am going to go up to 0.055. I am not an expert but I would stick pretty close to stock. Maybe go up to 0.040. See what happens. If it runs rough, go back down to .035. Its a chess game. You just gotta find what works for you!

About the auto parts, always try ebay. Your can get MSD parts for a good price. I bought a Jacobs Omni Mag ignition for about $140.00 Which is alot better than the $300.00 I would have paid.
Good Luck,
Joe E.

With the hood up look at the underside. It's got the gap settings and such there. Mine was 0.040 recommended (the stock ones were wore to 0.047-0.051), which is what I set them too. I couldn't afford to do the wires, cap/rotor, and coil yet. Hoping to do that soon though, it sucks being an unemployed college student!

The 3923's made more of a difference than I expected. Idle is smoother, and it seems to respond to the throttle a little more readily. I had to reset the PCM though, because it immediatly tripped the 'Check Engine' light.

Todd, tell me about the poor college student crap. I am one too. But I just keep on looken around and finding things I can use. Ebay is great! My 1990 Dak has a set stock gap of 0.035. I regaped mine to 0.055 and it runs great. Like I said before, you gotta play with it a bit.
Good Luck

The gap ranges from .035" - .040" (factory gap) on the different models. Remember though, if you move to an aftermarket ignition system, running the gap at .050" is somewhat defeating the purpose of the better ignition system. Run the gap on the plugs at no more than .005" larger with an aftermarket ignition system...and if you use nitrous or a supercharger (or both), reduce the gap by .005" to compensate for the higher cylinder pressures.

Bernd, yeah man, I got a brain full today. I regapped my spark plugs from .035 stock to .045. truck ran great. But then I heard that jacobs says to go with .055. So I did that and the truck began to run sluggishly. and I almost stalled it a few times on breaking. So tomarrow I am going back to .045 or .050. Any comments?
Thanks
Joe E.
Kristien, I hope everything works out. See now I have to follow my own advice and RE gap these s. plugs. Funny how that works...

Yeah, I know my stock ones had worn to about .05 and the truck was definatly feeling _slugish_...

Of course, I did run 4th gear most of the way across Kentucky AND Tenessee at 80mph towing a loaded down U-haul. Interestingly the temperature gauge never went above 200... Gawd I love this truck. Too bad I only got 10 mpg doing that! Can't have everything I guess.

I wonder how it would do, the same run, with the new and unworn plugs? Hmm... can't wait until I can afford the new wires, borg and warner cap/rotor, coil and 180 T-stat. After that all thats left is upgrading the electric fan (I'm a fan freak. Bigger the fan, the better. I don't tow trailers a lot, but it's nice to know I can if I need too) and exhaust. Then I can move on to body mods and internal engine mods... Those are fun!

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Bernds Turbo project works out. Either that or I'm going to only do body mods and look into getting a 4.7L later... hm.

I gapped mine to .045 when I did a complete tune-up and added a hotter coil, then added a Gibson and a PowerStack filter later and wondered why I didn't notice much of any improvement from either them or the ignition mods. It started missing on cold mornings so I regapped them to .040 and it must have regained ten horses just from fixing the error - talk about vroom!

Soo... Should I go all the way back to .035?

JACOBS and DODGE Problems?
IP: Logged

Message:
My 95 Dak is in the shop and I was told that the Jacobs Electronics (Omni Mag) burned up my plugs, wires, rotor, and cap. They also said that you cant use after market electronic ignitions on them. I have had that on my truck for 2 years and no probs until now. Has anyone heard this stuff before or are they, as I suspect, blowing smoke up my exhaust pipe?

How old was it when it failed, Bob? I've had mine for about six months now w/o any problems, but I also switched intially to Accel cap & rotor, and recently to Borg Warner when I heard bad things about Accel's.

It was 3 months old I called Summit racing they said I could get my money back. My mechanic told me unless you have a high performance engine you shouldnt run this. I don't know if I believe this or not. I have the original coil on it now. After reading the package on the Accel it said that it may not put out any more volts than the stock one.

On the disclaimer regarding Accel vs. stock, I wonder if that's not just because some Fords et al come with hotter ignitions stock. Ah, well, I kept my stock one in reserve too, and if the Accel gives me any grief I'll replace it with an MSD. Or just keep it OEM like you have. I didn't notice any better pickup or mileage from mine; the plug wires went on first and every other ignition mod meant no nevermind to my Dak. Thanks.

With that you'd want to be gapped at .045 to take advantage of the MSD 6A Ignition. That's just .005 over stock gapping.
