I have a 95 3.9L and it's giving me fits, Intermittently while driving it will act like it loses all power, and start backfiring through the manifold. If I floor it it is fine, and it eventually clears up however it acts sluggish for awhile. I've tried to pinpoint what the environment is when it does it, I.E. wet out, cold, hot, full tank, low tank, etc, and come up grabbing at straws...HELP!!!!! I've replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor...still nothing.

Is it when engine is cold? Try cleaning TB and IAC in the back of the TB.

Almost sounds like an ignition prob,

Coil, crank sensor, or your plenum gasket is
leaking but the back fire?

First thing you need to do is check all the
electrical conections for corosion

Cleaned the TB and ran an injector cleaner service throught the system. It doesn't seem to happen only when it's cold, but that's when it happens the most. (When I'm on my way to work in the morning) But it also happens when I've driven the truck at highway speeds for a while, then slow down for and exit or traffic, etc.

I've thought about an ignition problem myself, like coil, but why would it run fine if when it happens I floor it. Someone else had suggested the Throttle position sensor. What sucks is that it is intermittentent, and hard to track down. Also other problem that has developed is sometimes when I go to start the truck it just clicks like a bad started, but if I try cracking it a couple of times it then starts fine, probablly a different issue, but worth the shot. Also the first problem seemed to develop after I had a accident with it where I hit a stone wall and yanked the front passenger tire clean out the ball joint and lower control arm, bending the arm, had to replace the suspension on that side, but there was no body damage to the front.

I've got a 96 3.9 with the exact same problem. Changed the cap, rotor button, plugs wires, and 1 injector. (the garage found the injector) Fuel pressure was 47lbs. The only code they can pull out is the O2 sensor. Don't think it is a fix, but going to change it today. Let me know what yours is when you get it. If I get mine fixed first I'll let ya know.

I heard some talk that when the truck is hit in the front end, sometimes it messes up the computer. i know nothing about this, but maybe you can look up previous posts on "wrecked computer?" or something similar. I can tell you with almost certainty that your starter/solenoid is bad, and the starting problem will start out occasionaly and gradually worsen. It's an easy fix and costs around $75 bucks, but DO NOT get the cheap one from auto zone like I did. The contacts dont line up and must be adapted. That took me an hour to troubleshoot and fix, but the starter should take you around an hour, maybe even less.

Already changed the O2 sensor, had a new exhaust and cat put on it, and afterwards the check engine light kept coming on, ran the codes and it was the O2 sensor, replaced it and the light or code hasn't come back. Didn't help the lose of power problem though had it before the new O2 and still have it after..... :-(
