Truckperformance.com sells MSD Ignitions for my 3.9L '93 dak and says it increases hp and tq. Is this true? I thought all the ignition did was turn the truck over so it could run. im confused. Also, would a new MSD coil be of use for me (starting up that is....right now my truck doesnt turn over as easy as it used to).

Your ignition works all the time when the truck is running, it's what ignites the air/fuel mixture. Those aftermarket ignition systems won't give you any more power unless your existing system is in really bad shape, or you added a turbo or supercharger. It never hurts to replace your coil as preventative maintanence item though. And the aftermarket "performance" ones aren't much more expensive than a factory replacemnet part.

It only takes so much spark to ignite the air/fuel charge, anything above that is just wasted energy. I've run stock ignitions and MSDs on circle track racecars and there is no difference in performance. I prefer the MSD because it is very dependable, I've never had an MSD fail or mess up in 10 years of racing.

Ray, you're thinking of the starting system *battery, starter, solenoid)

The msd ignition raises voltage to the primary side of the coil from 12 volts to about 390 volts. If you use the msd blaster coil coil output woll be ablout 45000 volts. You should be able to increase spark plug gap about 10 to 15 thousands over factor setting. This increase should be noticeable. I went with the msd 6a, msd super conductor wires and accel high output coil, my gains were very noticeable, more low end torque especially.

Just out of curiosity, does installing a aftermarket ignition give you better mileage? And if so how much could you typically expect?

i think that my MSD was the best fuel economy mod to date. Just because your stock ignition ignites your air/fuel mixture doesnt mean it does it completely (complete burn). I wouldnt call it a lot of power but expect better mpgs, throttle response and noticable top end "oomph".
