Subject: Loud Fan noise...intermittent at best
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey all, this might be a typical truck thing, or a result of a clutched fan...but about 1 out of every 7 times I start my 2000 V6, it sounds as though there is a HUGE fan running in the engine bay. My truck sounds like it's ROARING. Then, after a while, it goes away, and the truck is quiet again. Is this normal? What is it?
BTW- doesn't depend on temperature...it will do it from a cold start-up, or after it's been running.

Thanks

Sounds like your fan clutch has what is called "morning sickness". The viscous coupling in the fan is in the open position at shutoff. The sound you can hear, best described as a growl, is the fluid being pumped out of the fan clutch cavity. I have the same problem on my '97 3.9L Dakota. Let me guess...when you start it up and drive the sound is present until you hit second gear then it goes away until you shut off the vehicle.

Fair wear & tear, Be worried when it no longer does this. My Jeep did it for about 80,000 Miles before my wife fipped it.

Oh, btw..... She doesn't touch the Dak!

Actually, it doesn't sound like a growl at all...it sounds like a large fan. To me anyway...

But, I hear Jeeps go by that make that sound all the time...like there is a big fan running.

Anyhoo, if it isn't serious, I won't sweat it. It's just hard to pinpoint WHEN it will happen...so I can't figure out a cause.

01 CC 3.9 does the same thing and my 97 5.2 CC did the same thing. My 01 seems to do it for a few minutes when the air is a little damp. The clutch works by shearing a viscous fluid, the drag from which couples force from the driving shaft to the driven hub. The clutch consists of two sections, a fixed drag section that provides a minimum level of torque and a variable drag section controlled by a bimetal thermostatic coil visible from the outside. When the air is damp I think it causes the viscous fluid the thickenand cause increased drag and maybe combined with road crud and corrosion on the firct part creates enough drag to cause the fan to drive at engine speed.
