What the hell is this thing. Is it what is causing my truck to choke up and stall out?

I just spent $800 for a Intake Manifold Gasket
replacement. Did the dealership leave this off
to try to fuck up my truck and make me spend more cash!

just took a look at mine, that is where the hose from the blue PCV valve, that is supposed to be in the valve cover is connected. The hose is black rubber. Hurry on back to the dealer and insist on getting the rest of your truck back. Yes it is what is causing your truck to stall as it is acting like an open throttle plate that has a bad throttle position sensor.

I'm not sure what the heck it is or what it does, but it attaches up with another hose and goes directly into the side of the T.B.

What youre seeing is directly below the PCV hose connector, and there SHOULD be a small foam cap over top of that. If you take your PCV hose off while the truck is running, and cover the end, the truck will die. I have a 97 v6, and that same piece just has a foam cover on it. Your stall problems maybe be from a fouled PCV valve. Disconnect the hose from it, pull it out of the valve cover, and give it a hard shake. If you hear a metallic rattling, it should still be functional. Also, wash the PCV hose out, it might be clogged up. Just go back to the dealership, and ask to get one of the foam covers, or maybe try NAPA or Autozone.

btw. its a 1998

thanks for the advise guys and the quick

response. I covered it with a thick plastic
cover.

That should hold for a little while.

Also after it stalls "dies" it has a hard time starting back up. Any ideas what could cause that?

I am going to check the pvc valve and hose tomarow! I will keep you posted!

Sic,

like they said, there should just be a cap over that nipple. BUT, with it off, your truck should only idle much higher than normal.. say about 1000 rpms and it should jump up and down about 100-200 rpms. It would not cause you to stall because all that hole is doing is letting more air into your truck so the idle goes higher. Just go to a parts place (or dealer) and ask for a little 1/4" cap for it.

i think you can rent a fuel pressure tester at autozone... if not they are only like $15-20. Just do a quick pressure check. Even if your PCV is stuck, you shouldnt be stalling all the time.

It sure does sound like its coming from the fuel side... pump, filter screen (they are known to get clogged up good), and injectors.

That's too funny. My 98 had the same plug off also. I never noticed it until I replaced my TB. I couldn't get it to idle right and I went through the hell of thinking it was the idle valve, then I thought I had a bad new TB. Took it to the dealer and they couldn't figure it out. All they said was you have to put back on the old TB. Then I take it home and I'm looking at that hole. Hey, here is an idea, why don't I block it off. Well, never had the problem again. You'd think the dealer would have caught that. Im pretty sure that's the way it came from the factory. Weird part is I never saw the problem until I put the 48mm F&B TB on.

Wouldn't want any other!

If you just spent $800 for a gasket, I would make the mechanic worry about it. It always takes forever to get your truck back, so thats probably why you wanna take care of it yourself. But if people charge so much for their work, shouldnt they double check they quality of the work they do.
