Subject: Catalic converter rattle
IP: Logged

Message:
My Catalic converter just started to rattle. Rattle goes away once everything is warmed up. I just had it in the garage for another problem and the mechanic is telling me not to worry about it that it will burn its self out. To be honest I dont know much about these things and was wondering if the advice he gave me is valid.

Will this cause any problems? Truck is running good. MPG is around 20-22 (1994 3.9 V6 automatic)

Also engine light has not came on indicating any bad sensors.

Yes it WILL cause problems. Get an exhaust shop to replace it. Most will do that for $200-$250. If those parts that are rattling decide to stop up your converter, then you have a real problem.

Mine rattled for a month before i fixed it, i knew what it was but i was too lazy to do it. I ended up taking the whole exhaust system apart because i had chunks of ceramic wedged in the muffler 3 feet behind the convertor.

Check the heat shield first though.

Thanks guys! I checked my heat shield and it doesn't appear to the problem. I pounded the converter and didn't hear anything. I never realized that the rattling is actually broken up pieces of ceramic!!! and that it could clog the converter and lodge in different parts of the exhaust!!! Thanks!

I read various post on here where guys cut them out or cleaned them out and reused them. (????) Is that feasible? Will it throw the sensors off or hurt the emission system.

Just boggles my mind that it goes away after everything is warmed.

Thanks again!

To clean the converter out is feasible and by far cheaper and easier but in most states you won't be able to get it inspected. I did it to my 96 Dakota and I am told it even boosts the horsepower a little. A word of warning though, if you do this the truck will be a bit louder but not much to worry about with a stock muffler.

I had the same problem with my 99 v6, and so did a buddy of mine with a v6 also. It was broken chunks of stuff in my cat. It annoyed tha hell outta me for a month so i went to tha muffler shop and got a new high flow cat and flowmaster 40 series muffler with dual exaust. It sounds awsome. If u get a new muffler get flowmaster. I get compliments from people all tha time about how great it sounds.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I really dont know very much about these things and never had one go out on any vehicle I owned. I live in Pa and there isnt any emission testing as of yet but I perfer to replace the converter vs gutting it out...just incase this state decides to go with the emission testing which I hear is coming soon.

Which is a good converter to go with? The exhaust that is on my truck is stock and everything else appears to be in good shape. Any suggestions on what converter to use and where to get one??

For those whose Dakota is under 80,000 miles or 8 years, the catalytic converter is under warranty due to Federal emission laws. Call your Dodge dealer and they will replace it free. Rattle will disappear. This info is in your warranty book.

My catalytic converter on my 97 V6 was rattling also. I ignored it until I went on a road trip and it clogged up about 400 miles from home. Roadside Mechanic dumped water down carb while flooring the accelerator and it cleaned the system out and got me back home. I freaked when I saw him dumping water into my carb but he assured me it was ok. I got home safe, so it turned out he was right. The truck runs fine but the rattling of the converter is driving me nuts. I ordered a new cat on the web from http://www.all-catalytic-converters.com. They charged me $143.00 for a direct bolt on replacement. I went ahead and ordered two O2 sensors also just to be sure everything will be in tip top shape.

Hey Marks,

Did you read the part about the catalytic converter getting clogged?? If it is nothing to worry about how come I was stranded 400 miles from home when the thing clogged? I would agree with you that it is nothing to worry about if you are within a few miles of your home. However, If you are doing any kind of traveling out of your local area I would think twice. I just happened to find a honest mechanic in the middle of know where (south carolina)who was able to get me down the road again. I dont know if someone else will be as lucky.

Marks you are correct,

I was just trying to point out that if his catalytic converter is rattling there is the possibility that whatever is causing that rattle could clog it and theoretically he could get stranded somewhere. If I would have known that could of happened to me I would have had mine replaced before I headed out on the open road. I am just thankful I didnt have my daughter with me and I was near a service station when it decided to conk out. Needless to say it turned my 12 hour drive into a 14 hour drive. Just a heads up!!

Thanks everyone for the replies. My truck too is running well and no loss of mpg. I have been reading on the net and the one site that's listed in the post. I see there are universal convertors and direct fit convertors. I like to keep my truck stock but do not know which one to purchase. I think too that they can become clogged at any given time...........not sure I want to chance it since this is my primary mode of transportation......and when it comes to taking chances.....I never seem to win. Thanks again everyone!

Can you tell me which convertor to purchase? A direct fit or a universal convertor. There's a big difference in the prices.

Mar,

The direct fit OEM catalytic converter requires no cutting and no welding just a socket set and some other basic tools. The OEM catalytic converters are designed to specifically fit the year and model of your truck. The universal converters are designed to fit many different vehicles and you may have to cut or weld to get it to fit. Unless you are a metal bender I personally would stick with the OEM direct fit catalytice converter. It will save you a lot of pain and suffering in the long run.

Hey Rich, If you ever see somebody attempt to pour water in the intake while flooring it, do you & me a favor by slapping the $h1T outta him! You run an EXTREMELY high risk of bending a rod by attempting to compress water! Not to mention blow-by into your Oil.

You got lucky this time.

It's easier to un-bolt the exhaust since there is no gasket and flush it out that way, also MUCH safer. After you reconnect the exhaust Road test it for at least 10 miles to heat it up & blow out any excess water.

If it don't work hit it with a hammer, Still don't werk? GET A BIGGER HAMMER!
