I have a 94 Dakota 4X4. It developed a bad miss about a week ago. I put on new plugs, wires, cap and rotor as well as pcv and O2 sensor. Nothing helps. During the timing check I noticed the mark at 10 deg BTDC drifts 2 to 3 degrees either side of TDC under Idle. Is this an idication of a worn timing gear or chain. It's a 3.9L EFI engine.

Replace the chain and gears.Use the Mopar chain tensioner that replaces the thrust plate also.I don't know if thats your misfire but all the 3.9L's do suffer from weak chains and gears. Also check your intemediate shaft and bushing under the distributor there were some problems with heavy wear there also. That should help that timing wander condition.Oh while I am at it I notice a great deal of talk here about which chain set is better etc.Remember that ALL the chain and gear sets are made by only 4 companies. They are reboxed and it seems like a hundred folks are making them. They are not, they all buy and rebox.Same with Antifreze only 2-3 plants and companies in the country make all the different brands.

Thanks dcxer,
I bought my truck new in 94. I've put 225,000 miles on it. I've read alot of bad reviews about the 3.9's but I guess I've been real fortunate. Probably time for a new chain anyway Huh?

Thanks,
Jim
