I have a chance to buy a 1995 Dakota 4X4 with a 3.9 L V6 engine in it. Nice clean truck with low mileage, but the Lemonaid Used 4X4 guide recommends against the 3.9 L V6 in the 1990 to 1996 models as being "unreliable and anemic." From what I have read on this website so far that seems to be an accurate description of the 3.9 L. Can I go by the book (the Lemonaid book) on this?I'd appreciate some further comments from someone knowledgable with the 3.9 in those years. Thanks.

I have a 1995 Dakota sport 4X4 short box I bought
new in Dec 1994.

I have 86,000 on the truck, the only thing I ever
replaced was the front drive shaft at 62,000
and am now on my third set of tires.

First set 40,000 hit a rock and cut the sidewall
so I bought a new set of cooper Discover, had
about 35,000 on those and ran over a flat file
on the road one day so instead of buying 1 new
tire I bought 4 new cooper ST 10,000 on those

Had to take the boot and cover off the 4X4 lever
and squirt some oil on it was getting stiff.

They are nice reliable trucks and what he meant
I think was with a few mods to the engine they
do have some nice power.

A V8 or after market throttle body
Cold air intake system
1.7 Roller Rockers and a low restriction exhaust
and they run very well.

Of course I liked mine so much I moded it to the
max every thing I could do short of a Blower
and I just love this truck.

My truck still looks and runs like new and I plan
on keeping it untill death do us part. Just so
smoth and tight on the highway its unreal how
well this truck stood up to all my off roading.

I am pulling 24 25mpg on the highway after just
the basic mods I got that with it.

3.9 V6 3.55 sure grip

Thanks, Larry. So it sounds like if I buy this truck I am going to have to make some modifictions to deal with the poor performance. If it's just a matter of putting in a different colour air filter or something like that... OK. I can handle that. But fixer uppers who get right into the engine I rank up there somewhere with space scientists and plumbers and doctors; it's "a tiny bit" beyond me. So I guess I will steer clear of this truck and look for something else. Thanks for the input.

don't give up so soon..theres alot of potential u can do on your own that requires alittle time and a repair manual......
1.replace stock air cleaner with a free flowing ..some of us love our 14 in. K&N open element
2.better spark plugs and wires
3.replace the fuel filter
4.personal opinion here..replace all fluids with synthetics..i have 180k miles and still get 19mpg..attribute this to synthetics
...these r some things to help out..plus there are some bitchin accessories some of these GENII owners have that might change your mind..

They are nice trucks and are just fine the way
they are, I was very happy with mine in stock form.

With just a few easy bolt on mods they run real
nice. No you don't need to be a scientist to do
these things. You don't need to do them at all
and you will still fall in love with a Dak.

A throttle body change cold air intake and a
differant Exh will get you 25 30 HP, pleanty
of power in the little Daks

Not everyone gets carried away like me and some
others on this board we are going out and blowing
mustangs and ricers off the road but you don't
have to.

I think I am one of the worst I stuck over $6000
in mine.

I have a 95 CC 4X4 3.9L

Mine is almost bone stock and it's a great truck. I just don't race anyone! Is it slow? YEP! Do I care? NOPE! Does it do everything I ask it to? YEP! It's the best truck I can think of owning, the 4 wheel drive is great, the size is perfect, maintainence is easy and cheap, it's been super reliable and it still looks good.

Looks like I missed out on that truck. After I finally decided to call again and check it out and maybe go for it, I called but it sold to someone else. But I think I will keep looking for a Dakota 4X4. Thanks to all who helped me out on this.
