Subject: Tranny case leak HELP !!
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1988 4x4 v-6 automatic. Right at the rear of the tranny extension, just before it goes into the transfer case, on the bottom, the fluid is poring out of a small hole there. As you look up into it, it kind of looks like there is a small white plastic funnel going up into the tranny. I cannot find any reference to this in any manual I have. Does anybody have a clue what this is? It is wide open. Should it be capped or is something clogged inside and making it back out through there as in some sort of vent hole?

Hi,

Not sure what it's but that is the same problem I am having. I posted a question on this page titled 1994 Dodge SS 4WD V6 and no-one has responded..........if you find out what this is, please let me know.

I have a call into the garage and they are telling me the rear seal in the transmission may have went and the gasket is shot. I am now waiting on a call back for a price for the repair

I wouldn't doubt my rear seal is shot. I'm getting ready to pull the rear drive shaft and put new U-joints in and a new rear seal in the transfer case. If all I need to do is throw a rear seal in the trany too, that would be great. I just can't find anybody to even tell me what the heck that little hole is and why it is there. Also, don't see a how a bad rear seal would force fluid out there?

The garage told me that the transmission and the transfer case are to be filled independently of each other and when the seal goes in the tranny the hole is for the fluid to escape.......same as if the seal goes in the transfer, it will leak out there as well.....I am having both seals replaced. This is the closes answer I can find. I Thought for sure someone on this site may have had this same problem. Guess not???

Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Just got another call from the garage. He again confirmed what I just sent about the hole. He also said that if your U-Joints are bad they can cause the seals and bushings to wear so I take it in Wed. Costing me $300.00. Wish I had help. I'd do it myself.

Bruce,

How did you make out with your tranny leak? Mine just went in the garage tonight for them to begin work in the am.
