Subject: will bigger tires affect my gas milage?

Message:
hi everybody, i bought a 2000 dodge dakota club cab with a 3.9l, and it came with some puny 215/75/15 tires on it. they look rediculessly small, i want to upgrade to 16" rims and tires. i drive about 100 miles a day back and forth to work, so changing the gas milage is a big issue. so my question is, if i put on bigger tires i will change the final drive ratio lowering my rpm at cruising speed, will this get me better gas milage, or will the heavier tires and added contact patch kill my gas milage. thanks in advance guys.

Depending on your rear end gear ratio, it may help or it may not.

I have 3.55 gears and 235X60X16 tires on 16X8 rims. I have gotten over 22 mpg on the highway when taking trips. I have an auto trans so if you have a stick you may get better milage. Of course I have done quite a few mods to my truck as well.

You can find your gear ratio on the inside of your glove box (from what I understand) on a sticker there.

Hey gino. I have a 92 auto and switched the tires that come on it (225/70/15) to (235/75/15) and gas mileage seems to be the same. I took a trip going between 60 and 75mph on the 225s and got 19mpg. Combined driving in the 235s, just easing on it w/no high rpms i get 17mpg, but then I factor in the diffence in size and it puts me right at 19mpg. Plus the 235 roll a LOT smoother at high speeds and you will definately appreciate this, but it doesnt handle as well with the large diameter tires. I prefer 235/75 but if you have enough room a 255/70 might be nice.. Just make sure the rim is wide like 8in or so. I got 15X6 and they squeeze the tires a little too much and would rather have 15x8.

as long as the overall height is the same you won't see much difference...on a 15x6 rim i wouldn't want to go any wider than 235/60R15 or if you want a little taller tire that won't hurt mileage too much try a 235/70R15...my stock 215/75R15 were around 26 or 27 inches tall i think..with the prices so cheap on EBAY for 15x8 or 16x8 rims or even R/T rims 17x9 i would think about gettin rid of the stocks if they aren't at least 8inches wide..

i went from my stock 15' rims and 235 tires to 31' bfgoodrich tires, and 15'baja stlye rims. it looks cool, as far as gas, i havnt found a vast difference, i am actully thinking about switching back to stocks, and trying to clock it. i will let u all know... i have a '99 2wd v6 3.9l and uhh the 31' tires seem to like to hit my fenders on big dips. watch out, my spindals r comming soon.
