So... how many of you guys absolutely hate anti-lock brakes? Had my brakes let me stop a bit faster, I would have totally missed it.

Anyway, I just barely tagged it. I got a ding on my left fender right to the right of my V6 emblem. How much could you estimate this to be to fix? It caused my paint to flake some too so it won't be able to just be "popped out". I'm just asking for a general estimate since I know prices vary bigtime.

I also seem to have gotten a problem with one of my wheels from it. It makes a swishing noise (like a piece of tape on a bike tire while riding down the road) when I'm traveling down the road. The faster I go, the more frequent the noise, so I know it has to do with the rolling of the wheel. It also sounds like it's squeaking when I'm driving down the road (the whole time). This is all happening while I'm just moving in a straight line, not the turns. My friend suggested wheel alignment, but if I let go of the steering wheel, it doesn't pull in either direction. Anyone know what it could be or have any suggestions of what to look for if I jack it up and pull the wheels off tomorrow? I'm not sure if it's the front or rear tire quite yet either...

Damn anti-locks... it seriously felt as if I had just hit the brakes hard like when a stoplight changes red right before you get to it. I was going 50 mph and saw it in my light beam as it popped it's head up out of the weeds about 50 feet away and I laid onto the brakes right then. It didn't even throw me forward if that shows how slowly I deccelerated. Grrr...
Oh well, I guess I'm lucky all I got away with was a ding and not a deer through my windshield.

Nope... just a dent removed and prolly a repainted fender.

Along with work on the wheels and maybe the alignment.

as for the thing with the tire you most likely have a condition known as belt separation, which is bad as it could lead to a blowout. Sometimes it shows up as a bulge in the tire side wall and sometimes it takes a trained mechanic, NOT a tire buster, to properly diagnose it. If it squeeks 3 or 4 times per tire revolution you have a bad U joint.

Hmmm...could be the u-joint. I sure hope it ain't belt separation. I suck at driving as it is...although my reaction time this time was really good, but I don't think I'd handle the truck so well if I blew a tire out. Especially a front. Thanks for the advice though. I'm gonna pull the tires off tomorrow I think and have a buddy of mine who knows a lil about that stuff help me look for anything obvious. If we can't find anything obvious, I'll have my dad take it in next week.

About your brakes, and not stopping fast enough. it is a 5000lbs truck you are trying to stop going 50 mph hour.
I hate the stopping distance in my truck compared to my car.

My dakota has the disc/drum setup and I hear you about not stopping fast enough. My grandpa has a dakota with four wheel discs and not only is the pedal feel much better but I do believe that it stops the truck in a shorter distance, even though that one is a Quad Cab and mine is a Club Cab. Anyways, sorry about the deer and your truck. Hope you get everything fixed.

anti lock brakes aren't going to make you stop faster or longer. They are to help you be able to steer and not lock up the wheels. You said yourself that you can't drive well so get off the road.

Naw sh!t Sherlock! That's why I said I HATE anti-lock brakes.

"...so get off the road."

The only way to become a good driver is to gain experience. Personally, I don't like driving, but I have realized I'm a better driver than most of my friends so I know it's just due to experience and the want to gain that experience is what keeps me driving.

Hit a buck last sat night as pissed off as i was about my truck i was so glad that i was not in my wifes grand am. I hit it doing about 45 and i think i threw it about 10 feet. The guy in the other on coming lane just missed it i seen it in his lights gave me a little but not enough time to stop.Good thing i was not doing the 55 mph speed limit. I am glad but concerned that the airbags never came out.Deer fur all inside the engine compartment.Even got fur on the top and tailgate. I could not belive how heavy that thing must have been that must be what it is like to hit a tree or a brick wall.OH in case your wondering i killed it almost instanly. It took out my bug guard, grill, newly installed transcooler, condenser, radiator, eletric fan, waterpump fan, bumper all in pieces, passenger side headlight, hood has dent in front and paint is peeling the fan belt popped instantly and i lost power steering .Luckily my wife and myself were not hurt.I give the dodge credit i dont think the ranger would have taken it so good. Now the fun starts dealing with the insurance i explanied that i did not want used parts or aftermarkt parts used on it. It is a 02 quadcab with 7400 miles on it i only had it for 11 months. It had to be towed congrats to AAA only took 2 hours to get a tow truck to come.No i didnt keep the meat or the antlers i just wanted to make sure it was dead for doing that much damage to my truck. I think i would have been pissed to see it get up and run away.I guess it will try those deer whistles their cheap. i guess i am done venting.

I had tire seperation once without realizing it. One day I just noticed a medium pull to one side on the steering wheel but otherwise drove fine at speeds up to 50mph. I then was accusing the wife of hitting something to mess up my alignment(no dinner for me that night)lol. A few days later as I was getting about ready to bring it in for an alignment, I took a 30 mi trip one way on the freeway to go somewhere with the wife and the thing rode wildly,as I can only desribe it, down the road. On the way back 1/2 the tread seperated on my fairly new cooper tire, but did not blow out. Actually drove better after it happened until I could pull off somewhere to put on the spare. Definitely was not a noticable defect to the untrained eye before it finally seperated.

Actually they do help you stop in a shorter distance IF they work correctly. Antilocks wll stop faster and shorter than locked up brakes. Also as you said they allow you to still steer.

I live down a road that is covered in deer after dark. I built a custon Deer Guard out of 3" pipe and Heavy Duty angle Iron. About 6 months later I hit a 4 Point buck @ 45mph, Never saw it coming until it was in front of me. I had about 3' of skid marks. I T-Boned him perfectly, bent the middle angle Iron piece slighlty and broke my brand new $20 fog lights.

Dang glad I built that guard or it would have been a catastrophe.

Buy a GOOD brushguard not one of the flimsy plastic/metal decorative ones.

Good luck with your dent,
Shank

Great idea shank, a good guard is a must if you live in real deer country.

Sarge, anti-locks do not stop faster on dry pavement. In rain, snow, gravel, etc. they will stop faster, and of course being able to steer is a great benefit. But in a straight line on a dry road, locking them up is the faster way to stop. Now if he didn't have anti-lock brakes, he's need to stop quickly in the rain while going around a corner, and they would lock up and he go off the cliff. Then he'd be saying "how many of you guys love anti-lock brakes." lol
